p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Dropped 5D3 from 1meter: Should I be worried?

So I dropped the 5D3, no lens attached from my waist height and it landed and bounced on a wood floor, luckily (I think) landing on the hotshoe.

Everything looked okay but then I mounted a lens and it would not drive the AF or IS. Took a picture, the mirror worked but gave Error: Can't communicate with lens. Only able to take videos. Then about 5 mins later it started to take and record pictures but still no AF or IS. Then I went to the office to find a small screwdriver to try and tighten the mount down although it looked fine. Got to the office and tried quickly once more. All of a sudden, AF works, IS works, no more errors and all AF modes seem to work.

My question is: Should I be worried? and anyone know what might have happened to have it stop communicating and then miraculously start working again 20mins later?

I had planned to take this on my trip to Borneo tomorrow but mainly as a backup to the 1DX as my Fuji XE-2 will be my second shooter for most stuff. I don't really want to bring 7D, 5D2 or 1D4 as I have my biases against them but maybe that would be a safe choice. I will go out today and test the 5D3 as much as possible.

Thanks
Geoff

I think you have a problem. The mount likely would have loosened but the pressure you put on it when you tried to tighten likely allowed something fractured internally to line up again to temporarily work. I think with a long lens mounted on it the mount will be stressed and the problem will arise again.

Just my thoughts.......

I would leave it at home regardless of testing today. It may not be reliable. Who knows how flaky your electronics will be on the trip. You've go the 1Dx, just take one of your other bodies based on what you'll be doing. You should send the 5DIII in for a clean and check. I dropped mine last summer and it was apparently working fine, but Canon said the sensor was misaligned and fixed that.

Dropped my 5D3 last April also from about a meter on to concrete in Berlin when
someone tried to steal it. Bounced on corner of camera. No functional damage.
Still works great.

I actually never ended up tightening the mount as it started to work again and I just left it. Also the mount appears fine and in order but I realize something must be off. I will see how everything goes today but will likely just throw the 5D2 in the bag instead.....I knew there must be a reason I never get around to selling these bodies

No, you shouldn't be worried at all because you have other camera bodies coming out of your wazoo.
Have a good vacation and badly needed time of rest away from work.

Went to Borneo (Kuching) a couple years ago. Watch out for humidity. Great
museum in Kuching with a abundance of shrunken heads. Have fun.

If it works fine, I'd say you don't have anything to worry about.

There are 1852 metres in a nautical mile. If that helps.

You guys are killing me....shot for 2 hrs at -15C, no hiccups so far. Going to check the images now for misaligned sensors or crazy kung-fu bokeh or gremlins in my images

Geoff,

Your camera is likely FUBAR. Fortunately for you, I have a spare 5D3. I also have some time off over the next couple weeks, and I've never been to Borneo

It is definitely beyond repair, and might explode at any time. Luckily for you, I am an expert at safely decommissioning broken 5D3 cameras, so if you ship it to me, I will dispose of it for free. Heck, I will even pay for the shipping in the interest of public safety

I've decided that I like to live life on the edge and will take the 5D3 as I can't deal with the other 3 cameras for various reasons.....7D: no need to explain....5D2: I'm after birds not landscapes but I would likely chose it for the FF sensor...1D4: my bag is already perfectly packed for my gear...adding a gripped body will throw off my ZEN....
