Hi Nikon! So I shouldn't buy the new Tamron 150-600mm because?

That's what I said on POTN. Told them they release Canon first so they can hit a home run with the Nikon shooters!

Mine worked great up until a month ago - then it started to lose focus very soft photos from both the D4 & D800 I sent it back will see what happens.

After some more testing last night, I found the following:

1. When tripod mounted and remote controlled in AF-S with center point, the lens would lock and then consistently begin tweeking.

2. When VR is ON, the lens does function somewhat better in the tracking department, but nowhere near good enough for birds. Only small moving subjects.

3. With a subject moving at you in decent but not wonderful light, the lens just couldn't keep up. The result of 7 shots was 3 focused, 4 OOF. Kinda Sad.

4. Backlit/side lit subjects outside in late afternoon sun, the lens never could lock on to the subject until it got so close that the original framing was far gone.

My camera store isn't going to like me, but it will be returned this morning. Now the debate begins on what if anything to replace it with or am I going to a dual system (Nikon for portraits/landscape/walk around, Canon for wildlife and birds).

A slow 5x zoom pretty much has to suck at BIF coming at you by design - hardly a surprise - but it's not a Nikon problem. Practically every other lens made by the company will get the job done, even in low-contrast light (300, 200-400, 400, 500, whatever.) Surely this is simply a question of reaching for the hammer to put a nail in the wall.

Not sure I agree with you on this. The 100-400 does it fairly well, albeit a little slow to focus. However, my concern was more in the department of not being able to maintain focus once it was initially locked.

Great shot BTW. They don't ever seem to fly for me there.

Wow, another great shot of the gooses by TM! However, I was wondering which of the 300 birds you deliberately focus on, there must be method to this flock madness I should get my lens today or tomarrow, so I will hope for good luck from the copy lottery. -Jim

Thanks a bunch, Jim. I picked the guy left of center with his wings up. I knew there'd be some
sort of crop for a keeper. The trick to the mass flights with a tele, is pick one and stay with it. You'd
rip your hair out goin' for comp. and BG...believe me, I'm down to 17 or so. GL with the lens.

Hey, you're good luck...I just sold a 20 X 24 canvas wrap of the crop!!

I have found the 80-400 excellent at birds in flight. And coming right at you on my copy.It is better at auto focusing then my naked 300 f4.I have seen way too many great shots with this Lens not to think that people are getting bad copies and there is a huge quality control issue going on

Don, You're probably right. I returned the lens today, but will give Nikon some time to get it squared away and get it again. Unless the Tamron is really good.

I thought it handled well and the VR was phenomenal, but something was just off on the focus.

Sorry for your problem with the 80-400mm. For the prices Nikon overcharges for their stuff,
they should ashamed. They had better get a grip on quality control. Heads really need to roll.
Nikon's reputation has been seriously damaged by this BS.

I have also had similar problems with the new 80-400 G. I have had it for 2 weeks now and am now seriously thinking of sending it back for another copy. On another forum I commented how pleased I was with it. And overall, I was. But, based on what I have written below and what I have read here and the images I have seen posted here, I think that there may be considerable variation among copies.

I shot it with my D300 and extensively with a D800E. All my editing is done at 100% directly from the camera. After extensive testing and comparing, I now feel that this copy is NOT tack sharp as others have said here. Of course, what some call tack sharp and what I call tack sharp, may be completely different. As I said, the first thing I do with any and all images is to view them at 100% right out of the camera. I guess some folks call that pixel peeping. I do not see why. It tells the story instantly.

This copy I have is…..pretty sharp…... but I did expect better.

1. Also, once it locks on, mine chatters in the same way when on the D300. Not so with the D800E; i.e. it just quietly locks on and quietly stays locked on.

2. But, as someone mentioned earlier, my copy does have problems with tracking. It really favors stationary subjects.
