Wonderful shots everyone! So what would the Tamron do for me but add a pound of weight?

For you, maybe nothing. For others that do not already own a 100-400 and a 1.4x TC, they would save $1130, get 600mm @ f6.3 instead of 560mm at f8, at a weight difference of only 3/4 of a pound more.

Compared to a 100-400 with a 2x TC, they would save even more money and weight would almost be the same.

In addition, the Tamron owners could go from 400 to 600mm, or from 600 to 400mm faster than anyone could put on or remove a TC.

Could have used a 600 f4 with 2x TC for this shot:

  Canon EOS-1D Mark IV    EF400mm f/5.6L USM +1.4x lens    560mm    f/8.0    1/2000s    1600 ISO    +1.0 EV

Yeah IQ has fallen off a cliff with that one. This is the lighting I find worst for Canon, especially on the 7D but on all of them to some extent. Still 600 II + 2x or 800 + 1.4x would have been much better.

I suspected it was a huge crop as I've seen this happen as well many time on my own images under similar circumstances.

well... simple TC or stacked, I sometimes forget to reckon with the atmosphere compression factor, and no lens, plus or minus TC, is going to conquer that realm...

Tony,

How do you find the 100-400mm for BIF? I've talked with a guy who uses one and he said the number of keepers was very low. What's your experience both with and without converts?

Too much focus-searching when using a TC. Bare lens gives me pretty good results:

1

  Canon EOS 20D    100.0-400.0 mm lens    400mm    f/8.0    1/3000s    800 ISO    0.0 EV

2

  Canon EOS 20D    100.0-400.0 mm lens    400mm    f/5.6    1/3000s    800 ISO    0.0 EV

3

  Canon EOS 20D    100.0-400.0 mm lens    400mm    f/8.0    1/3000s    800 ISO    +0.5 EV

4

  Canon EOS 7D    EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens    400mm    f/6.3    1/4000s    800 ISO    0.0 EV

TC doesnt work well for moving objects. But 100-400 with a 2x TC handheld on a static object in sunlight works well IMO. No NR or sharpening applied, RAW photo converted in LR4

See Below

Full Photo

  Canon EOS 5D Mark III    EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM +2x III lens    800mm    f/11.0    1/320s    640 ISO    0.0 EV

Crop of above Photo at 100%

  Canon EOS 5D Mark III    EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM +2x III lens    800mm    f/11.0    1/320s    640 ISO    0.0 EV

With the Canon 1.4x III do you still retain the AF ability on the 5DIII? I still get AF with the Kenko 1.4X on the Canon 400 f/5.6 with 6D. The image quality with Kenko is good and I don't know if the image quality will improve with the Canon. Thank you,

You know Tony...you're certainly making it difficult for me to justify buying expensive glass with threads like this...cut it out! I KNOW that the glass is the reason I don't get images like this, it just CAN"T be me

Very nice especially considering how many knock the 100-400's sharpness. I wasn't aware hummers could take cold weather.

The only people that knock the 100-400 are people who have never used the lense. There is a learning curve on use with lenses like the 100-400, but many people aren't willing to learn how to use it. Much simpler to sell the lense and then complain to anyone that will listen about how lousy the lense is. That's quite ok. I'll enjoy mine, and chuckle upon reading negative rants from the know-it-alls.
