Thanks, Tony. I haven't used my 100-400 + TC much on birds or surfing, but here's one with a 1D2 + 100-400 + Sigma 1.4x TC, 560 mm, f/8 (wide open), 1/320 sec, ISO 400, hand held.

Looks good.

ISS, best image yet! (image22461) by paulcamerastination, on Flickr

Stacked Canon and Kenko 1.4 teleconverters, shot with a 50D, handheld.

Am I missing something, or do I need a telescope to view your image?

Nice ones, Geoff, but nowhere near as sharp as Whayne's. Sorry, but the one of the Lynx sucks when it comes to sharpness.

Tony

That is shooting through chain link fence and on the 7D so of course it sucks Anyways, the combo is just fine if you don't want to AF on BIF or quickly acquire AF on new targets at varying distances.....sort of like the new Tamron actually...

I've never used the 2x TC, but use the 1.4x TC a lot with this lens, even for BIF's now and then.

I know it's "only" using a 1.4x, but those are excellent. I never liked putting any TC on my 100-400mm, but I might reconsider that after viewing some of the images on this thread.

Awesome examples of what this lens/photographer combo is capable of.

Cheers Tony. I was amazed at how well the 2x worked on the 100-400L. I've always thought that might be pushing it too far, but will give it a go.

I'm impressed with the IQ, and as you can see they are wide open bar one, which was only stopped down 1/3 stop. The full sized shots show excellent feather detail and the AF is reasonably good and can be used for some BIF work with a reasonably good success rate, especially on 1 series cameras.

Tony,

As always, great images!

I think there is going to be a long list of people wanting to buy your 100-400 Mk1, if you decide to sell it when the 100-400 Mk2 becomes available.

Personally I think said people would be better served booking a flight to Vancouver Island to spend a day with Tony learning how to setup a blind, shoot in M mode and post process with his workflow rather than buying the lens that is likely exactly the same as everyone else's.............

Imagemaster..... Most samples with this combination I've seen are not very good. Your shots are the best I've seen by far!

Excellent shots. Tony, are you using MF or AF with taped contacts on the TC? If you don't mind...

You guys are doing some kind of black magic with the 100-400. I've never seen so many images together like these before. Kudos!

I must have a dud, but I'll give it another chance with the 5DIII.

Im very pleased with the 100-400 lens and TCs, even stacked TCs

5DIII + 100-400mm + 2x TC III + 1.4x TC III = 1120mm f16 wide open at iso 6400 and its sharp!!!

Brown nuthatch going for my feeder in the yard. 5DIII + 100-400mm + 2x TC III = 800mm f11 wide open iso 800

Moon shot with Canon EOS 6D + EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM + 2x III TC + 2x II TC = 1600mm handheld manual focus f22 wide open 1/320s 3200 ISO

Great picture Brad. The exif info made me laugh though. The description of your setup made me think of the old Larry Bird vs Michael Jordan commercial; "One knee, through the window, off the floor, off the scoreboard, over the rafters, nothin' but net."

Amazing results. Thanks for sharing them.

Wonderful shots everyone! So what would the Tamron do for me but add a pound of weight?

Damn, that's crazy good for stacked TC's. I assume the 400 f/5.6L would do even a bit better.

I know I was blown away how sharp it was, the only thing that sucks is its f22 wide open so high iso is often needed

thanks Im just glad I can get that shot with so little in expense, Id rather have a 400 f2.8, 500 or 600 f4 or 800 f5.6 but this is what I have and seems to do the trick, good thing the moon is so bright, only need 3200 iso at f22
