Small-scale family farming.
No need for an expensive mechanical tractor.
Water buffalos are cheaper and better. And have been used in Asia for thousands of years. They are mild-mannered, resourceful, and give the children some useful chores to attend to.

It was amazing to me how docile these beasts of burden were when I was in the Philippines. Good capture Charlie!

Thanks Douglas and WC.
During those many years when my travels included much of eastern and southeastern Asia, I saw very few tractors in action except those that were like a small lawn mower that you walked behind- and most of them were pulling small carts.
But I often saw water buffalo working in fields, and they were so mellow that I assumed all their wildness had been bred out of them long ago. They could work in the smallest rice paddies and be led about by children to get their supper in the fringes after putting in a day of work.

I was in Vietnam for 2 straight years(1967-1969) Charlie. Saw NO tractors but many water buffalo! They were as prized as the cows in India.
Nice work.....cannot tell what year it is either!

The rice paddies can' handle tractors anyway as you know but these 4 legged, 4 horse power tractors are better.

Thanks for commenting, Dan.
Yeah- I was a vet back then and was traveling around the world. I bypassed Vietnam and explored Cambodia instead. Something about the second dumbest war the US has ever been in- and I didn't want to see it up close.
Too bad, because the Vietnamese people are some of the most gracious and friendly people in the world, and I never had the chance to visit them in their country.

Hey, Bob...popping is good; I'll take it any time .
I've always been a film shooter, and my cameras were Canon A series (manual everything): an A-1 and an AE-1.
Film here was Kodachrome 64. My choice for 40 years.
