Hi all. I'm new here. I just bought a used 5D mark III. Shutter count is coming up as 54,000. Seller says it's 4 months old and cosmetically it's like new. Is this cause for concern? Isn't that a lot of shutter actuations for a 4 month old camera?

Welcome to FM. It really depends on how it was used, and, where you are getting the shutter count from. There are lots of ways to obtain a shutter count, most of them useless. Canon can provide you with a true shutter count, but you would have to send them your camera.

I can understand your concern over such a high count for what was described as a relatively young camera, but it is a question better asked prior to purchasing as opposed to afterwards .

As the poster above pointed out, the various third party actuation counters may or may not give you an accurate reading, and there may be a difference between the counts given by different software. Canon service is the only place you can get a true count.

Thanks for your help. I used an App called "Shuttercount" that I purchased through Apple because it was the only one I could find that worked with my Mac. Because the camera is such good condition cosmetically I assume that is was used professionally and really well taken care of, or that the shutter count is wrong like you said.

Thanks again!

Yes, point taken. I did ask but seller said he didn't know. I have the option of returning but it seems like it's not reason to do so.

Guy was probably doing time lapse...which means the shutter got used lots but not much else does. Either way you just bought a camera that is meant to be used. It'll be fine man.

Mine has 67,000 currently and it has been babied... With check ups at Canon twice a year, at least.

If the shutter fails, its like $200-300, its not a big deal IF it should happen. It can happen anytime... It can fail at only 1,000 "old", 10,000 or 400,000... Just a roll of the dice.

You just hit the nail on the head, if the camera looks good cosmetically and it's working now then use it and enjoy it. If you got it for a good price then what the heck?! The shutter may go at 50,000 or it may go at 500,000! Who knows, if it's gonna go, it's gonna go. $300 to replace it is not the end of the world!

I wouldn't worry at all about it, use it and when it fails, get it repaired. It's just a tool. A sports shooter can easily run up the shutter amounts like that in 4 months. I've shot 4000-10,000 shots over a weekend tournament and i don't even shoot that heavy.

54000, is not a lot of actuations, given the median life of the shutter is 150K.
A camera used professionally actually concerns me more than one used by a hobbyist. A hobbyist babies its camera. professionals use it as a tool.

If its in good cosmetic shape, and functions well, you are good to go.

When we were shooing our NASA time lapses we put over a million clicks on a number of cameras, mainly 1Ds3 but also many 5D2. None of the cameras started out new to begin with. We had only one shutter go, and that particular camera has been to hell and back before it even got enlisted in our time lapse movies. So your 5D3 is just getting warmed up

I only use shutter count to help negotiate/determine price, assuming the body is in excellent condition.

If you think you paid a fair price, 54K count is not high and in my view, not a reason to return it. Like others said, only trust Canon with actual shutter counts.

I agree with all the posters above, a failed shutter is a simple procedure and low cost to replace.
54k is normal count for a pro, but high for a hobbyist.
A typical wedding can nail ~3000 frames, with 4 weekends a month that is 12k. 4 months will be about 50k. That does not take into account if he has other jobs like e-sessions, headshots etc during the week.
No fear. Enjoy your camera.

Based on my tests I believe FoCal reads the 5DIII shutter count perfectly. http://www.reikan.co.uk/focalweb/
When the number is high many sellers say they don't know, so I bet that number is right.

54,000 is not a lot. Mu 5D2 has triple that and runs just fine. It also looks brand new because it spends most of its life inside an underwater housing.

You did fine as long as you didn't pay top dollar for it.

a few years back, I did a local deal on a clean 7D, good price camera looked new, less than a year old at the time. About a year later I did a shutter count on it and found out it had 68K... The 7d was only used as a "team" camera for my T&I business, so it hasn't been an issue... I bet in the years since I bought it I've put maybe another 15K on it... I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage....

I guess I'm going to go against the prevailing opinion. You asked the seller what the approximate number of clicks were and he said he was not sure. Did you ask for an approximate amount? Any shooter who shoots at a rate of 150k clicks a year is a heavy user. IMO unless he is a second owner he would have a fairly good idea.

My guess is the shutter will last for years and never give you a problem. However, if you paid close to new price I'd be a little unhappy with the seller. Also I'm too lazy to do a search but I'd imagine the shutter price for a non CPS member would be around $400+ … not $200 that people are suggesting at the low end.
