How does this work?

How many have used one and for what special type of shooting?

Thanks
Karl

It is a direct replacement for the normal drop-in filter already in place. It just has a dial on top that allows you to spin the CPL as desired to change the polarization.

CPL's are great for reducing reflections off water, reflective surfaces, bluer skies, foliage "glare" reduction, etc...

I love CPL's and may consider buying one for my 300 2.8 eventually.

Probably cheaper than buying a 95mm size which fits on the end of the lens!

(Tamron 150-600mm zoom size.)

It's a very small, easy package, and far less expensive than a (very large) front filter. Rotation is also quite easy, and is done with your finger while observing the scene through the viewfinder. All the current Canon white lenses use the same drop-in, so it's very practical to share one drop-in between multiple lenses. In short, I think it's a really nice system.

As for tradeoffs by not having the polarizer as the first layer that light has to pass through, I imagine others here will have some thoughts.

Yes, they are relatively cheap, and easy to change out with the plain glass filter your lens comes with. I find shooting in the am or late in day with a moving subject, I just don't have enough light that the polarizer is worth giving up the ISO and resulting increased noise. With this soft light, I am not sure the polarizer is necessary except for its effects on water reflections. If I happen to be in brighter light, I will put in in to tame the harsh glare.

I would move quickly, when they are out-of-stock you could wait a year.

I use the Canon PL-C 52mm Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter in my 300/2.8L IS and 500/4L IS for occasions that I want to control reflections, most often when the image includes sunlit water (esp. backlit), and sometimes for reflecting surfaces like windows in a building (you can change bright reflections to dark).

I also have a 48mm drop-in CPL for my 200/1.8L, but I can't find it.

What lens are you using?

I am not surprised at all. Try looking for 48mm CPL instead, that might help.

OK, we seem to be narrowing the search now: Jim, have you looked at the back of your 200 f/1.8 ?

OK, so there is a finger/thumb dial on them to rotate, I was thinking without looking at one that they were fixed.

Jim, Would be in a Ver1 500 lens

Psychic1, really? They sell out??

Well, I would exactly call them cheap, but down here in Florida, they're almost essential.

I looked for one for three years when I owned the 200L IS F2.0 and Adorama, B&H and Calumet never filled my order.

I've always wanted one, but for birding I wasn't prepared to lose the 2 stops of light. Now the high ISO performance of cameras like the 1D X is so good, it's starting to become more viable. I wish Canon could offer new versions using the HD foils Hoya use, as these only lose 1.333 stops of light. I would probbaly use the CPL when doing surfing shots more than anything else.

I use it mid-day and it's a must have for any light colored birds. Modded mine to use the faster Hoya filter. Also you do not have to dial the CP to the darkest setting to still get a big benefit. So a stop and a half in bright harsh light, isn't too hard to give up.

So you replaced the Canon glass with Hoya HD glass? Is that difficult?

I took the Hoya filter out of it's holder(over sized for this app it turns out) and glued it into the Canon adapter, so it was a pain.
