100-400 L IS. On paper the 400 f5.6 may look sharper but you're not going to see that sharpness hand holding or panning unless you're God.

The 400 f5.6 focuses much faster, but the 100-400 zoom would help with Baseball.

Sorry, disagree with the italicized. It can be done without a tripod, though your technique needs to be good (I use the basic prone and seated position I learned shooting Highpower rifle - and I assure you I am not Dave Tubb, The God of Highpower, or any other god . ). Perfectly fine results at 100% on the 7D - unless I screw up the position - though I admit it's not always easy.

That being said, the hardest part of this lens for birds on an aps-c camera is the narrow field of view. Too narrow to be my only bird lens, and likely way too narrow for baseball. The 100-400 is a good idea, as is a 70-200, depending on or distance.

My vote is also for the 100-400. Where will you shoot from for baseball? If you are able to shoot from the dugout or near the on-deck circle, the 100-400 will let you get batters, plays at the plate, the pitcher, the infield, and shallow outfield with ease. I don't think it is long enough (even on a 1.6 crop) for the outfielders, though. At least not if you are positioned near home plate.

I think the 100-400 is less of a compromise for birding than a 400 prime would be for HS baseball.

My comment / attitude relates to this persons question rather than to everyone. Buying a "first" long lens implies a learning curve which will negate any IQ difference between the 400 prime & 100-400 zoom for quite some time when hand held.

100-400L is better than a 300 f/4 + 1.4x, optically and AF speed wise. 400 f/5.6 is the best for AF speed and has a slight edge over the 100-400L for IQ. 400L is the better birding lens hands down, but 100-400L is just so damn versatile and has IS and 45% shorter mfd, it's hard to ignore. If I was just doing birding I'd say get the prime, but for a range of activities get the 100-400L. I think a 70-200 would be too short for baseball and not even a contender at all for birding, unless you like shooting pelicans and geese.

when I made the transition to canon I passed on both the 100-400 and the 400 f5.6, and went with the 300 F4 IS L with 1.4x TC. I have found that this combo works wonderfully, and is tack sharp in nearly all instances I've ran it where there was no error on my part.

300 F4 IS L + 1.4x TC = 420mm f5.6 IS

Plus when you need less focal length - the 300 F4 IS without the TC works excellent. Plus with a couple extension tubes, you can get some decent macro with it, as it has the smallest MFD of the three mentioned.

I used this up until I bought the 500 F4 IS L MK I, and I have not looked back . . . but at the time, that was the best I could afford, and it served me very well.
