to those who have had this lens, have you been shooting with Tcs 1.4x, 1.7x or even 2x?
(the new ones)

Do you mean the 80-400G ? I tried it with the TC14EII but have to say that performance was not that great (AF) especially in low light (birding in Japan) and I quickly ditched it and went bare. I haven't tried it since because f7.8 isn't ideal (@400mm) except in very good light.

That said I know some people seem to like it but I'd check the conditions they are shooting in and see how that compares to your local conditions.

Yes that newest lens: Nikon 80-400mm ƒ/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S Nikkor
I hope it works well at least with tc 1.4x

Hmmm. As I said, tried it once, no need to try again as the AF struggles in poor to so-so light. I also found that the IQ was enough so that cropping from 400mm was as good as with the TC but without the f-stop hit. This was handheld so on a tripod might help.

I did not see the same results as above.

Mine required a massive AF fine tune, something like +15, but I got reasonably sharp results and certainly better than cropping the bare lens. Handheld.

It's f/8, so the autofocus is going to act accordingly - but in decent light (which is the only place you can really shoot an f/8 lens) my D7100 autofocuses pretty well, even at f/8.

That said, there is a loss in sharpness (to be expected), but f/8 is more of the limitation than the sharpness loss for me. Starts to inhibit your ability to isolate backgrounds and shoot in the woods. So, I still pack the TC and pull it out when I need it, but I probably only actually shoot with it ~10% of the time.

I found the sharpness to be about a wash between the 300mm + 1.7x as compared to the 80-400mm + 1.4x.

I also "played" with the TC14EII on my 80-400G but didn't like the IQ. No need to even try the TC17EII or TC20EIII. Suffice it to say I don't use TC's on this otherwise excellent lens.

I gave it a try and the results were ok (I am talking about the 1.4 TC). AF speed was not that bad (on a recent body which can handle f8, D4 or D800). On the other hand 99% of my pics are with the bare lens...

Well, mine will be in my hands tomorrow and I have all the Tcs. So stay tuned.I sure hope it works well at least with 1.4x. And that is all I would need
My 80-200/4 works very well with 1.4x Tc and very acceptable with both 1.7x and even with 2x.
so the 80-400 should do ok with tc 1.4x.
We will see.
