I did not see the same results as above.
Mine required a massive AF fine tune, something like +15, but I got reasonably sharp results and certainly better than cropping the bare lens. Handheld.
It's f/8, so the autofocus is going to act accordingly - but in decent light (which is the only place you can really shoot an f/8 lens) my D7100 autofocuses pretty well, even at f/8.
That said, there is a loss in sharpness (to be expected), but f/8 is more of the limitation than the sharpness loss for me. Starts to inhibit your ability to isolate backgrounds and shoot in the woods. So, I still pack the TC and pull it out when I need it, but I probably only actually shoot with it ~10% of the time.
I found the sharpness to be about a wash between the 300mm + 1.7x as compared to the 80-400mm + 1.4x.
