p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What you guys use to load and host pics in the Web?

I'm looking to load my pics in a web site, to get away from FB.

Nothing fancy nor expensive.

If this not the right Forum, please let me know.

Regards

Eltano

Zenfolio and Smugmug are two popular ones. There is also Flickr which is free and gives you a ton of space.

Zenfolio

PS This thread is not Nikon specific so I won't be surprised if it gets moved to the correct forum.

I still have my Smugmug, but will not renew as I found their newest interface was not to my liking. I'm not a professional and find Flickr much easier AND its free!

Smugmug. Used it for a few years now and happy with it so far.

Flikr looks fine I'm just not sure about copyright retention - I've heard/read there are some 'clubs' on there that you may inadvertently 'join' thereby giving them rights to use your photos ? Not sure if that is correct because I left Flikr years ago when I signed up with Smugmug.

I started with Flickr (and still have my account) but have moved to using FB because it's a decent host and I can share with family and friends at the same time.

If not for family & friends I would have stuck with Flickr

I use Zenfolio for the largest part and Flickr to keep up with my friends here on the thread. Not every photo a friend takes ends up on the thread and I enjoy looking at all of the photos

I have my photos hosted at Google's website Picasa. They offer unlimited albums with free storage up to 21 GB. The display is very simple. Nothing fancy here but you can display with slideshows if you wish. What I most appreciate is that they offer software for your computer through which you communicate with the website. You select the folders you want uploaded. You have the option to upload the folder once or to have all future additions to the folder uploaded automatically as you place them in the folder on your hard drive. That feature is very useful for me since I'll often use a folder for three months at a time, dropping in new photos I've taken. I tried Zenfolio but it doesn't give me this flexibility.

Picasa picks up keywords that I add during processing and displays them with the image. It is easy to copy the image address and drop it into an FM thread. I post only a limited number of my photos on FM. I continue to maintain an Upload and Sell subscription to support this amazing website but having photos hosted here is much more complicated than the method I've developed with Picasa. They aren't set up for selling photos, which many other websites do, but for simple photo hosting they can't be beaten. I expect Google will be around for a long time, so it seems a sensible choice for bare bones hosting. Good luck.

I upload pics to my own wedding website. I give the exact URL just for the pic that I want to show someone. Otherwise, people see my wedding website pics. Also, I load to FB as it is a fun place for me as I have been shooting every thursday night at a local art gallery acoustic music jam session and potluck.

I was using Phanfare for many years and have recently switched to Smugmug which I like much better. They seemed to have really pulled ahead of others in terms of layout and usability options.

Since you shoot mainly Nikon, i would suggest nikonimages.com It's free.

if you pick a singleword username like eltano, you could then get to your galley directly with eltano.nikonimages.com

If you're more of a technical sort who wants full control, you could roll your own with your own web hosting and the free software Piwigo.

I tend to distrust that services will be around, or be to my liking, for the long haul. When you spend so much time setting up albums, uploading photos, tagging photos, customizing the way everything looks and fits together, etc., it sure sucks to uproot it and start over. So I went with my own webhost and my own software install, and am very pleased so far.
