Apple is made by Sharp but not showing who's Dell is made by. Anyone know if the new MacBrook Pro can run a 4K display ?

Thanks

I saw a youtube video where a guy was running a 4k display from his retina MBP. So I know at least some of them do

Apple does not make a 4K monitor. Not mbp can drive a 4K monitor, yet, at 60hz. Google it.

Supposedly a new update to Mavericks will enable 60Hz for UHD support over DP for just about every UHD monitor that supports 60Hz. I hope they unlock UHD for older Macs too since many actually DO have hardware that can support UHD very well, Apple just has it locked though. I used some hacks to get my 2012 Mac Mini driving Dell UP2414Q at 3840x2160x30p just fine. The hacks don't work for Mavericks though. Glad I didn't update yet. Not sure I ever will be able to.

Some people are running 4K monitors from apple via the thunderbolt port. It takes some hacks.

the problem with the cheaper 4K monitors are the low colour resolution, maybe 6 bits instead of 8 or 10 bits on better HD monitors. That's ok if all you want is resolution but if you're looking for accurate colour then you're still looking at $10K+ and really $30K+.

I'm really looking forward to price dropping....

10k-30k??

the $1000-$1300 24" UHD Dell is IPS with 8bit + 2bit FRC and the $3000 32" Dell is at least 8bit

the 28" sub $1000 monitors, some of those might be 6bits and I think all are TN panels, but as I mention above it's not just the sub $1000 or the 10k+ with nothing inbetween

NEC has some arriving this year too

To be fair I've been looking at broadcast quality monitors and I guess you're looking as basic displays. Sorry.

I'm certainly looking forward to more competition in the market place for 4K.

I just got the 24 inch Dell monitor (UP2414Q) -- its very nice. I've used other 24" Dell IPS monitors before this.

Works fine via thunderbolt and HDMI with my MBP/Retina -- as in the display is recognized and resolution detected correctly. The problem though is with 10.9.2 the OS doesn't do scaling in the way it does with the laptop's Retina display, so fonts in windows etc are too small (not a problem with the 32" I'm sure). I read somewhere that 10.9.3 will have support to scale external monitors, so I'm looking forward to that.

Photos look amazing on this monitor -- no more pixelation etc. Just like a bigger Retina display.

Also, I'm amazed to see that windows 8.1 handles the monitor (and scales it) better than OS X -- driving it from my Dell m3800 nicely. And LR works great -- didn't realized Adobe had finally updated it to work with ultra high-resoln monitors.

See my post about mac mini and UP2414Q I bet the latter parts of it would get you scaling without having to wait for 10.9.3.
