Just wondering if any pros are using the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 APO EX DG OS, Thought about buying the Nikon 300 2.8 but the sigma would give me a lot more versatility.
Give me your thoughts on the performance of this lens.
thanks,
Dave

From what I have seen, it's not up to the task at hand.

That is my opinion after limited use, but to be sure rent one and try it out.

In my opinion when using a tele lens it's either too short or you can move and frame the way you want. IMO

I have not owned or used this lens but have seen a lot of very positive reports about it.
I second the idea on renting.

I have used that model and currently have the new "S" model. I found both models to be fairly sharp and very versatile. The problem with the "OS" model is the focusing motor has had issues and it does not have a focus limiter. The new "S" model seems to be quite a bit more reliable and the focus speed is much faster when tweaked with the docking system.

I took a bunch of test shots in a local camera store with a used OS version, it seems tack sharp and I was impressed with being able to hand hold at 300mm set at 125 shutter in the store and get sharp images. it's in great shape and comes with a lens coat and a 105mm B+W filter for around $2000

Hi,
I used a one for about 6 months and it was a very good lens. I'd recommend it, especially for the price.

Good luck.

Cheers

Anthony

I liked it a lot when I owned it, works great, not as fast as 300/2.8 VRII prime, but still pretty fast when I was shooting sports with it. I recently sold it, decide to use 400/2.8VR to shoot college basketball now.

here is the link I did a little review shots...

I got the OS version, gave it back because of a strong front-focusing at the far end that Sigma didn't fix.
Got the 80-400 VR Nikon. Very happy, but I loved the Sigma and its bokeh.
Got the Sigma Sport version and I am super happy. Sold the 80-400VR.

If you have to buy one, buy the Sport version. It's definitely a very big improvement over the older ones for a lot of things, build quality and focusing especially.

The focus is FAST and even with the 2X TC it doesn't slow down that much.

Overall a fantastic lens, super versatility with 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters, very sharp with and without the 1.4 and sharp with the 2.0.

Custom controls with the USB docks let's you program the buttons so you can switch between focusing speed or accuracy, and it works.

Definitely another Sigma winner.

Dave,
i had 3 different copies of the original, all had focus issures. I went prime and never looked back. if i were looking for such a zoom range( which makes this glass very versatile) i might be very tempted by this glass. I have to agree w/ the other suggestions to rent the lens first and then shoot the H*** out of it during the time you have it. shoot low light, bright light, close/ far action, maybe some type of event/ sport that you have not shot so to lose any comfort factor.
i have read a very few negative reviews, mostly good or at least neutral reviews.
let us know what your experience is w/ the lens. who knows, your review might change my POV and tempt me and others to purchase a copy.

I ended up buying the Sigma 120-300 2.8, not he latest sport edition but the edition prior, it does have the stabilization. I really enjoy using this lens, I am usually using it close to wide open and it is very sharp. If I have to have a complaint it would be it is too big and heavy. I shot with it today hand holding at a inside commencement with a shutter of about 200. I have it on 300mm about 80% of the time but it is nice to have the wider focal length.
I might have over paid a little, I got it at my camera store-it's in great shape and came with a lens coat and a B+W front filter, I paid around $2200.
