Tamron 150-600mm gets DxOmarked!
DxOmark posted the Tamron 150-600mm lens review using the Canon mount. The tests confirm that this new super zom is the best they have tested to date:

"If Tamron built this lens to outperform the Sigma offering then they succeeded with full frame cameras. The gain in performance over their rivalís offering is less noticeable on the APS-C cameras. Despite that, the image quality is a slight improvement over the Sigma. Given the longer range and similar price, itís a pretty impressive achievement.

The Tamron even outperforms the pricier Canon lens on the full frame Canon EOS 5D Mk III though itís less convincing when compared with the Canon EOS 7D. Thereís likely too little in it to switch but for first-time buyers the new Tamron is attractive proposition."

Their test seems to follow with what most have observed- see the results here.

I saw this yesterday - I always take DxO with a gigantic grain of salt, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. I also find it hard to believe (as with most Canon gear) they have such low marks for the EF 100-400.

I'd already said it seems that the really bad examples I've seen are on crops, but I'd also (sadly) assumed a lot of the folks on crop didn't know what they were doing. I was half right - because a lot of them thought the results were splendid!

Anyway - as I also said I'm on a 6D (that leaves the 60D out of the picture - heh!) and am too lame to properly use AI Servo, so this thing could be right up my alley!

Regardless, I'm going to wait and see what Tamron's got to say about all this. It's too bad that unlike Sigma's Art Series, we can't do a simple firmware update.

Hmm, wonder what the lens would do on a C100?

Don't give up on this lenses potential, handheld on a body that has not yet been Micro Adjusted for this lens. A very shallow DOF at this distance at 600mm.

Update: Tamron Japan Customer Service has responded to my email, asking for further details, which I did. I also suggested they test the lens on a 7D & 1D Mk IV, in AI Servo, in the 450-600mm range, and with the shutter button held half-depressed as they focus on a distant subject then swing to focus on a nearer subject.

Hello

Your description of the problem is pretty well exactly what my 7D and 100-400 do.
I took the combination to Canon UK and after much discussion and comments, they concluded that this is what the combination does. It seems that there are times that the AF does not see any difference in contrast in the changed scene unless forced to by repressing the shutter or focus button. Sometimes my 7D will refocus after a few seconds, perhaps because I have inadvertently moved the combination. It seems that not all AF sensors in 7Ds are equal. Curiously there is a smaller problem with my 5D2 and the 100-400, but it is still there.
You must have a golden 7D, if you have no problems at all with your 100-400

My lens and 7D body will arrive at Tamron NY, today for testing by Pat Simonetti. We all should know something by mid week, being a officer in a large camera club I was also able to test two other 7D bodies all having the same results, tacking problems in Aiservo and constant focus pumping in order to achieve in focus images on BIF.

Way to go Karl, I also see the potential of this lens.

Awesome Jay, can't wait to see what way Pat decides to go on this: denial or acceptance....that will decide the lens' fate for a lot of people and maybe Tamron's future business also.....that said maybe I don't realize how small the forum sample size is and there are still 1000s of uninformed and uneducated buyers that will never know about the issue.

Nice images Karl .

After the problems with version 2 , I did not upgrade .
Just wondering and no I don't have the lens yet .

2.0.5 and the one previous to that, do not think it is a Canon firmware problem, but I could be wrong, time will tell, should know something from Tamron next week, Monday is a holiday.

No idea why it would be a Canon firmware problem

I'm exchanging e-mails with Pat Simonetti of Tamron also. I've given her the address here and suggested that although it might take some time that he or she read all of the several threads dedicated to thr 150-600 mm lens. This way Tamron could get a better understanding of what is going on with their lens and Canon 7D & 1DlV. If Tamron doesn't admit to needing at least a firmware up-date for the lens after reading the problems we're having I guess that will be that.

I was just wondering why some posts of 7 D seem OK and others complain . Version wise , Tammy did not develop lens over night and may have been using older software versions . But then ---
I know some of the " lens sucks " are posted by Canon employees [ Same with some of - " great lens , very happy with it " are from Tamron employees ] I don't really mind - they show goods and bads by people that are paid to take good shots or find problems .
No , I can not prove Canon , Sigma and Tamron do monitor these posts but I don't think they are dumb enough not to . I know Adorama does monitor POTN .

What are you talking about? The posts that say the 7D seems okay are referring to One Shot mode. The others that complain are referring to AI Servo mode.

Great shots Karl. Nice composition, color rendition and sharpness. Now, if Tamron can solve the AI Servo problems for moving targets for certain cameras, we could have a winner at its selling price.
