I've owned both the original EX 120-300/2.8 and EX 120-300/2.8 OS (not S). They provide excellent IQ for most purposes, and they definitely win the contest for flexibility at f/2.8, in this range of focal lengths. OTOH, I started with and always went back to the EF 300/2.8L IS (Mk I). I'm on my third 300/2.8L IS, now.
Chances are very good that I'd get the new EX 120-300/2.8 OS S lens, if I had a lot of field sports shooting in my future. Using a 70-200/2.8L IS II on 1DX and 120-300/2.8 OS on 1DIV (with 1.4x III, as required) would be a dynamite combination, field-side. For now, I'm better served by the 300/2.8L IS.
