This is starting to look like a joke, how many 18MP cameras do they have in their lineup now? Looks like Canon is firmly stuck in neutral as far as sensor tech is concerned.

Don't let it get you down. Part of the proceeds go towards research...

Might be worth the wait...

As usual, time will tell.

Beginning to remind me of GM and their odd-dozen of mid-sized SUVs they had from the mid 1990s to mid 2000s....

We see how well that played out...

Im pretty sure people shopping for entry level cameras don't care about sensor tech lol

Well, the new a6000 is 11 fps continuous shooting with subject-tracking for $648.

-24.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
-coverage of roughly 92% of the frame with AF phase detect

EVFs are getting better and better.

There are a lot of negatives as well, for sure. But really, this is getting old.

For my use, I don't care if Canon is forever stuck in 18 MP APS-C or 20 MP FF sensors.

I just want to see improvement in sensor performance!!! Wider dynamic range at low ISO and low noise at high ISO.

Also, why doesn't Canon introduce dual pixel AF in all their upcoming sensors?

Sigh....

No doubt they will, but I'd guess at the moment the 70D sensor costs more than the 18MP sensor due to lower yields due to it actually being 40MP. Also I think Canon will pitch the dpaf as a premium feature and get some better margins on these models like the 70D than the more cut-throat entry level cameras. Also interesting is if we'll see it in even higher end models like a 7D II or 5D IV. A 5D IV with say 39MP would require 78MP for dpaf. We don't know yet if all things were equal does the dpaf sensor impact on noise at all? Would the 70D have shown more improvement if a normal 20MP sensor?

It's not the size that matters, it's what they do with those 18mp. It's APS-C and an entry-level camera, so it probably won't be much/any better than the 7D sensor in a smaller, less feature-rich package.

Yes it's kind of a re-iteration of something already out there...kind of like re-patenting a medication (with very slightly different chemical formula) to get full price for it again. Not exactly a moral/ethical panacea, just a business thing.

I doubt you'd see the latest development in sensor technology in the entry-level DSLR. It's roughly the same 18 mpx sensor that's been in the 7D and most APS-C bodies since, with little change.

Are there any indications that Canon are actually making new sensor tech for the upcoming 5D3 / 1DX successors?

Any dramatic changes in their sensor production lines?

If the 5D3 comes with 23.3 MP, same dynamic range and SHADOW BANDING, I'll laugh and cry at the same time. And then I'll wipe my tears with my A7R.

I am perfectly happy with 18MP on a crop sensor... I think it is plenty for almost everyone resolution wise. Canon just needs to improve those pixels, that is all…

For FF, I think 26-28MP is a nice limit... I don’t find the 5D3 resolution limiting by any means at all and file sizes are manageable. I don’t see the desire for the 36MP monsters, personally. I would however, like the increased dynamic range, noise performance and lack of banding when pushing files… They can throw an 18MP sensor in the 5D IV for all I care, as long as they improve the performance! Oh, and I would also like the option to eliminate the AA filter as well. But I was really happy when Canon announced the marginal MP increase from the 5D2... The sensor is better than the 5D2, but still has ways to go especially with what has been coming out from other companies.

I look forward to see what Canon does with the next round of 1D/5D tech wise… They have done so well everywhere else, except the sensor at low ISO… I hope they can deliver on the next round of products!

I am very happy with the 5D3 and easily think it is the best camera I have used to date. The 1Dx is also very good but the price/performance ratio over the 5D3 is not worth it for me. The 5D3 is 90% of the camera for half the cost.

Canon, as many have come to know is not the fastest out of the gate in some respects. IMHO it also suffers from "big corporation mentality" brought on by conservative bean counters and internally propagated conservative management style. Being financially responsible is very important but is only one aspect in driving a business forward. Recognizing the need to lead also drives corporation success. It recently seems they only lead when they want to, or are forced to

That's why I've decided for the first time to branch out and experiment with the Sony a7r.
