p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bball shot clock remote - strobed

Local girls HS Bball tourney last weekend. I decided to try a remote camera for the first time at Bball. Mounted above the backboard above where a shot clock is mounted in many gyms. Worked well enough I may try it for the boys next weekend.

Here are a few of the shots I kept. C&C appreciated.

The camera is a 1D III with a 16-35 II. Since this backboard didn't actually have a shot clock mounted above it, I mounted the camera to one of the 2"x2" steel tubes of the backboard mount with a super clamp and a magic arm. It was about 4 ft above the top of the backboard. There was a strap on the camera wrapped tight around the steel tube and the magic arm and clamp had a steel safety cable run through them and around the 2"x2" steel tube.

The camera settings were 1/320, f/4, ISO 1600. I triggered the camera with PW III's. One gaffer taped to the magic arm and the other I was handholding. There was a cybersync transmitter in the hot shoe which then triggered the Einstein strobes.

Since I was shooting the girls, and they don't get up too close to the basket, I set focus on the face of a person about 6ft tall standing on the orange horizontal line you see in the pics above.

All in all, it probably took me an hour to mount it. Considering I was up and down the ladder about a dozen times or so. I think I could mount it now again in 15 mins or so.

Man I hope you had safety cables all over that. The fact that it could fall forward and hit a player in the head would scare the bejezus out of me.

Yes, there were safety cables (steel) and straps. The only thing that could have fallen would have been the lens if it was hit and snapped the mount off the camera.

Hmm, so how would one secure a lens in case it was snapped off the body?

My question is this. In Missouri, they don't allow anything to be mounted to the backboard. No remotes are allowed at all. Did you check with the High school association that sanctions the events. I was upset to find out that I couldn't do mine.

I really like the shots, but I worry about having it mounted where you did. Especially without the lens secured. I would have had a safety cable around the lens tight and then gaffered the hell out of it since it doesn't have a tripod foot to secure one through.

Glad you did it the right way! You could zip tie a safety cable around the lens. Either way, I would have the balls to do this.

good thinking. I've often wondered about that. Fortunately I've only ever needed to mount strobes in a catwalk and safety cables were fine.

I did know one guy that drilled through his pocket wizards so that a safety cable could be inserted through the body for added safety. I taped mine to things instead.

The nice thing about the Plus III and the X model is that it has enough space for a cable built into the lanyard area.

Great shots and awesome creativity. I'd love to try that but even with all the safety precautions I'd be too apprehensive to try
