Jasper National Park has vistas that amaze, and a wide assortment of wild animals that love posing for the camera. There is also a plethora of wild flowers. Little gems that are visual treats, providing a little dash of colour to the whites of winter, even if only virtually. Here are a few from last summer.
1. Red Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) - Not the traditional view.

2. White Camus (Zygadenus elegans) - Very bright morning light provide the strong shadows.

3 Alpine Forget-me-not (Myosotis alpestris) - A pretty little flower, and one which I find I cannot do justice to (yet).

4. Gentian (Gentiana glauca) - The blue-green colour of this species sets it apart from its cousins.

5. Mountain Dryad (Dryas octopetala) - A common species that develops feathery seed heads.

6. Fleabane (Erigeron sp.) - A pretty little dash of white. In the alpine environment, a lot of plants tend to be hairy to reduce water loss. Some also have a hight level of purple pigmentation (anthocyanin). I heard somewhere it helps plants prevent sunburn. It may be more related to the level of carbohydrates in the plant due to the temperature fluctuations, or some other biochemical reason. Either way, this plant has both in spades.

Fly Warning - If you have a fly phobia, don't scroll down!
Bonus: Looking At The World Through Rainbow Coloured Lenses - Unidentified fly species on a thistle. Light was quite bright, but those eyes! Couldn't resist taking a shot. This is where a flash would have helped though.
