p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wild Flowers

Jasper National Park has vistas that amaze, and a wide assortment of wild animals that love posing for the camera. There is also a plethora of wild flowers. Little gems that are visual treats, providing a little dash of colour to the whites of winter, even if only virtually. Here are a few from last summer.

1. Red Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) - Not the traditional view.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_7314Columbine_zpsc3daf89a.jpg
2. White Camus (Zygadenus elegans) - Very bright morning light provide the strong shadows.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_7252WhiteCamus_zps8fd5c305.jpg
3 Alpine Forget-me-not (Myosotis alpestris) - A pretty little flower, and one which I find I cannot do justice to (yet).
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_7119AlpineForget-me-not_zps5902e258.jpg
4. Gentian (Gentiana glauca) - The blue-green colour of this species sets it apart from its cousins.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_7017Gentian_zpsd0cc9ed6.jpg
5. Mountain Dryad (Dryas octopetala) - A common species that develops feathery seed heads.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_7070Dryad_zps58179548.jpg
6. Fleabane (Erigeron sp.) - A pretty little dash of white. In the alpine environment, a lot of plants tend to be hairy to reduce water loss. Some also have a hight level of purple pigmentation (anthocyanin). I heard somewhere it helps plants prevent sunburn. It may be more related to the level of carbohydrates in the plant due to the temperature fluctuations, or some other biochemical reason. Either way, this plant has both in spades.

Fly Warning - If you have a fly phobia, don't scroll down!

Bonus: Looking At The World Through Rainbow Coloured Lenses - Unidentified fly species on a thistle. Light was quite bright, but those eyes! Couldn't resist taking a shot. This is where a flash would have helped though.

Many thanks to all who view. My sincere appreciation to those who provide feedback. Flay me if appropriate.

So you nail the focus on the fly and miss it on the Forget me Nots? Hmmmm.
Your floral posts are always educational for me, thanks for the ID's and reminders on some of these Ken.
I enjoyed these, refreshing I say!

Beautiful set. That fly is unusual, not to mention sharp and colorful. Wow, it's nice to see the park's flora; it reminds me of warmer times.....

Very nice, Ken. Always nice to see a splash of color in the winter to keep you going toward spring with some hope! Keep going on the forget-me-nots. They are so pretty, they are worth the work. I like the variety in this set and the different take on the columbine.

A nice set, Ken.
I especially like the (outdoor ) fly shot- although it would be better if it were in a spider web being prepared for a soup meal.

Your summation of the Jasper is spot on Ken. The large scale beauty there is stunning and makes it so very easy to look at the beautiful small things you captured here. You did a fabulous job on these, I'm betting they weren't exactly sitting still for you The eyes on the fly are too cool Your comment on the forget me not had me chuckling, I just deleting a bunch I took last spring because I did a lousy job on them I love how you saw the first, that is a really cool shot Ken.
