I use an adapter with a small tripod collar, not the most stable solution but stable enough.
While my FD 80-200 L is super sharp in the center the corners aren't that great on the A7, do other owners share this experience?

Phillip, I'm pretty happy with my a7 / FD 80-200 L corners under almost all conditions. The only slight weakness I see is at 80mm and f/4. It's clean by 90mm and f/4. But, the issue is pretty minor. I did have right edge and corner issues with my first $10 adapter. I bought another generic adapter and the issue went away. I can do some corner crops if you'd like...

See no advantage of this lens over conventional DSLR lenses in terms of size and weight.
Make us look so stupid to have a mirrorless body but a lens bigger and heavier than a Canon EF 70-200 F4 IS. And I doubt the Sony Zeiss can be as good as the Canon.

Phillip -- I just finished my first controlled test of the a7 and Canon FD 80-200 f/4 L lens. I've included a link to the full sized test at the bottom. In short, the corners are a bit weak at 80mm, but clean up pretty well by 100mm. I think it looks pretty solid from there on, especially for a $300 40 year old lens . I'd be interested in how it compares to yours (and other tele zooms for that matter)!

I could be willing to sacrifice AF and IS for a smaller and lighetr landscape lens, but then the lens must support a tripod collar. Does it?

Many Canon FD adapters have a tripod connection built in. My cheap Fotodiox does. I mount it on that, and it seems to solve the weight distribution issue...

Why would you expect a telephoto lens covering the same image circle with the same focal length range and the same maximum aperture to be significantly different in size & weight than an equivalent lens from another system?

This lens + FF camera is both shorter and lighter than any equivalent Canon kit, so I personally do see an advantage: I can put together a nice 35 + 70-200 hiking kit with less weight and bulk than any other FF system.

Which is exactly why I'm not on the FF bandwagon for mirrorless. I went mirrorless because the lenses for my DSLR were huge.

Which would, by definition, mark you (and quite a few others) as a troll for posting here ...

Bottom line is it answers part of the complaint of lack of lenses for the FE series, and depends on performance to see if I buy it. I have Canons as well, and by default will always take the 2.8 unless travelling, where the f4 is smaller and lighter. I can use the Metabone + Canon f4, but focus is slow, so this is a benefit

The only reason I see to get this lens instead of the Canon, is if you want to use autofocus.
The weak spot of the Canon is poor performance at minimum focusing distance. And while the Canon lens is excellent indeed and very versatile, it is not not impossible to meet or even exceed. It is all over very sharp and with moderate CA, but still not as exceptional as the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

DCwatch.jp says March 19 for the firmware update and March 20 for 70-200 release in Japan so it might be in April for the rest of us (B&H shows Apr 16):

March 19th - the Sony firmware for α7R/α7

March 20th - Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS

thanks for those!

My lens is decentered to a certain degree, the left side is certainly sharper than the right one. I hope to get some 100% crops online in the coming days.

I am really thinking whether I should preorder the 70-200 OSS. I don't really need it and it isn't cheap but because I am a student I can get it for 20% off and sell it without a loss like I did with the SEL2470z which I sold last week. So the main reason would be to review it which is fun but also time intensive.

But I just checked the MTF graphs and the don't look to encouraging, it seems to be a little bit better than the 2.8/70-200 so it will be super sharp in the center and significantly wore in the corners. Which also describes my 25 years-old 199Ä Canon FD 80-200L quite well...
For my photography the Canon has the advantage of less weight and nice manual focusing, for serious landscapes I use a tripod anyway so the OSS wouldn't be an advantage for me.

So I would probably come to the conclusion that it is a decent tool but not perfect and 500Ä too expensive if you compare it to Nikon or Canon. The Canon 70-200/4 L IS can be had for 650Ä used so I would choose that over the Sony any time.

For people who need AF the situation is different of course.

A user on dpreview has received the lens and started a thread claiming the lens exhibits OSS shutter shock on the A7r. He says he doesn't see the issue with the A6000.

well nice shots, and it does seem sharp, if huge.

but no way to judge the edges in those shots, unless I missed one.

DXO Mark have tested the lens: link

Sounds promising

Conclusion: The Sonyís performance is very good and sharpness levels are very high, and even though it canít quite match the best in class Ė the Nikkor 70-200mm f4 - at 200mm, itís still unlikely to disappoint. Coming bundled with a tripod collar, the Sony even slightly undercuts the rival Nikkor model, making the FE 70-200mm f4G OSS look good value without compromising on quality or practical features.

Not too bad looking. That's a hulking beast. Advantage for the fe is you don't have a stupid adapter attached to the body.
