Prints from my old R1800 were beautiful with very rich even colors, which looked like it took a lot of ink (and it did). My new 3880 looks like the minimum ink is put down and the prints are not so glossy with some colors being less glossy than others. I don't like this look. Does anyone know if there is a setting that minimizes this? Seems like there should be a gloss optimizer or something over the top to even out the color and make it nice and glossy.

That is normal. The 3880 is not a high-gloss consumer printer.

Guess I can't help too much, I print portraits on premium luster and it prints very well for that. Are you using Epson gloss paper? Anything I want glossy, I send to my lab to do on metallic paper. It is very good on ink usage.

since the 3880 doesn't have a gloss optimizer, your only variable is the paper choice. Consider something like Pictorico or Canson Photo HIghGloss 315

Thanks everyone for your replies. The photo paper is Epson Ultra Premium Glossy. Photos are beautiful with the R1800. Does Epson have a large format printer that does have a gloss optimizer?

You could try a gloss photo sealer. Their are different types and I'm sure there's a glossy version. I used the this type (http://www.itsupplies.com/Premier-Imaging/PremierArt-Print-Shield-Lacquer-based-spray-1-Can-PA1950) before I bought a pigment based printer and it works great for UV protection too.

Print Shield won't add or detract from gloss, in my hundreds of times applying it. That's one of the reasons I continue to use the Premier product.

Thanks Sarsfield and John,

I'm not into spraying my prints. What pigment based printer do you get, Sarsfield?

Do you know if the Canon printers come out more glossy without gloss differential?

I also heard something about peizography, which from what I gathered was using a third party ink that looked better.
