Is it worth buying this lens, would come in a bundle & from what I can see them go for 2nd hand it is a pretty good deal ~$500. Or am I better with a 24, 50 set of primes?

I have no idea with canon gear but looking at moving over.

As a general purpose lens, I think this is one of Canon's bests. I have used this lens more than any other in my kit for everyday family shooting. If you are looking for something more specialized than maybe its not for you, but otherwise I have no reservations recommending it.

Kinda depends on what you want to shoot and what's important to you as far as versatility, price, weight, need for IS, ability to work around f/4, etc. Without more info from you, nobody here can give a meaningful reply.

Well I plan on buying the 17mm ts-e. I can't imagine having much left over for much else.

I usually run with a 35, 85 prime kit. But I won't be able to afford them so figured I could live with a general zoom for a while and get a 135 L. I want to get at least the 90 ts-e as well.

Canon body will be the 5d3.

+1

If you would prefer a set of primes to complement your TS-E 17/4L, I suggest 24/2.8 IS, 40/2.8, and 85/1.8. Heck, you could still get them, even if you get the zoom kit.

If you're a prime guy, that's not going to change with brands. The 24-105 is excellent for a walk around zoom, but it's an f/4 lens. Only you can determine if that's adequate for you. It's not going to hold a candle to the 17 tse though.

Still haven't told us what you shoot. So far you just listed off a bunch of gear. From your fetish for TSE lenses, I am guessing either architecture or landscapes.

I've just spent the day walking the streets in the French Quarter in New Orleans taking street shots using the 24-105 and I can tell you the 17 TSE would not hold a candle to the zoom for that type of shooting. Blanket statements like you provided are meaningless without some context.

Unless you have some specific background that gives you reason to know that primes are more functional for your photography, almost all photographers today will prefer a zoom for general use. The 24-105 is an excellent lens - high quality images, reasonably large and useful focal length range, images stabilization, not overly large for what it covers.

Yeah, I'd say the 40mm pancake and 85mm f/1.8 would cost you less than the 24-105 on the used market; and it's a matter of what flexibility you have in terms of other primes. And both are sharp and focus well; 85mm just requires being careful in high contrast scenes.

From your recent posts it seems you do a lot of landscape work. If that's the case, then the 24-105 would probably be the better bet, as it gives you a range and flexibility than the primes don't

I think both options are good

Also, if you shoot video, the 24-105 is hard to beat. Many have been sold to Cinema EOS C100, C300, and C500 camera users. In fact, I think it is sold as a kit lens for the C100. It has excellent color, stabilization, sharpness for video, including ML raw video. Also, since it is a Canon lens, it gets you vignetting and aberration correction for video and jpeg shooting.

You are correct. My assumption was that the OP already knew what he wanted in the TS/E - namely a lens that's best in class for IQ (all aspects) and control of distortion - that's before the tilt and shift qualities are considered. The context is that the 24-105 isn't going to be able to compete on an IQ level and depending on where you're at in the zoom range, it's rather poor for distortion too.

Yeah. I assume he intends to use the TS-E 17mm and 90mm for purposes different than for the 24-105L IS. Sounds like he knows what he really wants, and also wants to know if the 24-105L IS is a worthwhile addition - I think it is.

Yeah, I love my tilt shifts. I won't be able to afford the L primes 24, 35, 50 & 85 straight off. So I either get the 1.8's or suck it up & use an all in one zoom that is available in a bundle. It says the retail for the 24-105 is 1200ish while in this bundle it would cost me around $500.

I just need to know if its an all right zoom or a lemon. I am not trying to have the ts-e's do the zooms job or vice versa. I have the nikon tilt shifts now & want to have the canon versions.

I am thinking I will end up with: 17mm ts-e, 24-105 f4, 90mm ts-e, 135mm f2. I might grab a nifty fifty as well I guess.

**To save another thread** - Those with the 17mm ts-e + lee adaptor - Does the 105mm CPL work ok on the front?

Is there any difference between Version 1 & 2 of the 24mm ts-e? I just thought I might miss my big stopper

Is the 6D liveview as good as the 5D3?

The II is a lot better.

MikeW wrote:

I don't know. I do know that the 6D LiveView is as 'good' as the 1DX. It works very nicely with my TS-E 17/4L and 24/3.5L II.

P.S. "saving threads" by introducing new topics mid-stream can be counterproductive. Those folks who were interested enough to partake in the original topic might have something useful to say on the new topic (if they notice its introduction), but lots of people who might have input to offer will never see the opportunity.

my walk around lens on my 1Dx is either the 24-105 or the 28-300L, both IMO are good lens with a bigger nod to sharpness of image etc to the 24-105. The f4 shouldn't bother you as the newer cameras like the 1Dx have very low noise as the ISO goes up......

it's a very capable lens for outdoors in good light or indoors with controlled lighting/flash. Primes give you speed and low DOF though...depends on what you want your camera for.

My 24-105L was my go to lens, then I made the mistake of buying the 24-70 f/2.8 II. Only use the 24-105L occasionally even though I think it's a very good lens, IQ of 24-70 II is next level. But I do miss that extra 35mm when I'm out an about, especially on FF.

A nice compromise on IQ might be the Sigma 24-105 HSM OS. Scores better than the 24-105L according to DxO.
