I heard so much good things about the 24-70 that I took the bite and bought a used one on EBay! I'm crossing my fingers that it is in great shape like the seller describe...my first time buying something over $1000 on eBay. A little nervous, so wondering how everyone thought and experience buying on eBay?

Never had a problem myself; I've always tried to make sure the seller had a solid rating (96%+ positive), and has sold similar items in the past. I haven't bought anything over about $400 off eBay, though. I did consider getting an $1000 lens off eBay at one point, but never pulled the trigger.

In any case, that was a few years ago, and I understand that now you as a buyer have pretty good recourse if the lens is "not as advertised" or if something else should go wrong.

I have to ask, why would it be "free"?

Realistically you can open up a dispute within Ebay and it's not uncommon to get reimbursed via EBAY. It's really sad to say this but it's just a fact of the system they have incorporated.

You know you're suppose to return the lens otherwise it's called stealing.

I think I did my due diligence, the seller has a 100% positive feedback thus far and I used Paypal and Bill Me Later route so hopefully the transaction will go smoothly!

Actually it's not stealing. Specifically because the seller ships an item that is different than described in the listing. That's at least how Ebay sees it. At least that's how the one dispute specialist I spoke with did.

Problem is they don't collect proof that an item isn't as described so really its some honor system.

I think aspirebooth has to be ebay's number one biggest hater in all of the internets...i've never heard someone as outspoken as him on the subject of how terrible ebay is....

I'm a lot poorer because of eBay and really haven't had any problems. I have bought and sold high $$ items and it has worked out well. You just have to buy from someone with lots of positive feedback and not like the other transaction mentioned here where the deal was too good to be true and the seller had a big fat 0 for feedback. You are just asking for trouble in those situations.

That is the biggest crock of BS I have heard today - but it is still early. I have 400+ feedback on ebay, been a member nice 1999 or 2000 and 65% of my feedback is from selling. I sold my D700 there last September.

I have had cases opened AGAINST ME and I won - because I had all the proof that backed me up, and because the buyer was a scammer. I have had to open a case with paypal/ebay and HAD TO SEND THE ITEM BACK. I didn't get to keep it. If that was the case, I would be buying everything on ebay - even food.

eBay is a great place.............. especially if you're a buyer.
I bought my 24-70 there too. Got it safely and it was mint. You know the photography world is small and if you buy/sell a lot of stuff, chances are, you'll start recognizing some names. I recognize the guy's name and we had some good conversation.

I recently bought a Domke F-6 bag on ebay.....it was used, but in great shape....description was accurate, EXCEPT, that when i got the bag, it WREAKED of cigarette smoke...and we all know that people who are, or who live with a smoker, can't really smell the affects of smoke after a while, so the seller probably legitimately never smelled anything wrong with the bag....

Well, clearly i'm not going to keep the bag and store thousands of dollars worth of equipment in it, and kill the resale value...so i first notified the seller about the problem, and let them know i was going to open a dispute with ebay....by opening a dispute, it protects BOTH of us, b/c if i just said "hey i'm gonna send this back, can you refund my money"....i may ship it back, but they may not refund.....OR, they may refund, and wait for me to ship it back, and i may hold on to it...so i opened a dispute...

Ebay responded and said they had contacted the seller, and that once i shipped it back and the seller received it, the seller would refund my payment. So, i shipped it, sent tracking, they received it, and i got a refund. It was that simple. If i hadn't shipped it back, i wouldn't have received the refund. The refund didn't come from ebay, it came from the seller.

the process was really very painless....

I'm not a hater. They need to fix the system as its broken. The feedback systems really don't work since its so easy these days to artificially inflate the feedback.

Just do some searching. The seller will lose out on 99% of all disputes. Even having proof isn't enough. Its pretty well documented. When selling anything on ebay you had best ensure the description is 100% accurate.

Case in point. I sold a Nikon D700. I had the screen shot showing the exif data for the number of actuations. Buyer opens a dispute 11 days after receiving the camera and interestingly enough the actuations are approx 2,000 shots higher. Ebay allowed him to return the item for a full refund.

As I pointed out to ebay I had time stamped proof of how many actuations were on the camera. As I said they really don't care about protecting sellers. Since its not about sellers. They want to promote buyers buying as much as possible and that's fine but sellers just need to be made aware.

Even power sellers aren't immune to it.

You CAN block bids and set guidelines. I don't allow bidders with less than a certain amount of feedback bid on high dollar items from me. It is dumb to baby sit my auction, but has worked for me so far.

Try to avoid opening up disputes with Ebay unless you dont want to use it in the future. Sellers that receive more than 4 disputes per 100 transactions will quickly find out they aren't welcome. The same sort of things applies to Paypal. You'll see they make "guarantees" with protection but you'll quickly find that the protection is really a false claim that evaporates if you have more than 4% of transactions being problematic to them.

For a buyer I do agree Ebay is great. For a seller its a mine field.
