Leaving Dawson Creek, B.C., the Alaska Highway heads mostly north on the northern Great Plains towards Fort Nelson, where it turns west and crosses the Canadian Rockies.
1. An example of the flat-but-somewhat-hilly terrain.
2. and 3. Dropping down to cross the mighty Peace River, the Alcan climbs out and enters the town of Ft St John.
The Peace River ultimately joins the McKenzie River and empties into the Arctic Ocean.
The Peace River at this point is the biggest river the Alcan crosses.
