I just returned from an amazing fews days up in Yellowknife Canada located in the northern part of the Northwest Territories I believe 62 degrees Lat. . These are some of the images from a span of 3 nights. We were out shooting between approx 10:00 pm and 2:00 am. Yellowknife is located in the Aurora belt and is one of the (4) best locations in the world for viewing the Aurora. As you know the whole thing is always hit and miss and in fact the 2nd night we did not see anything, the 3rd night we were socked in with clouds and had to move ahead of the front then by sheer luck the sky cleared and we had a window of approx 10 min when it was really showing. Since i did not have the luxury of knowing the area I created all these comps on the fly so you take what you can get. These are all shot with a 5D3 , the camera preformed remarkably well in the conditions very low noise with relatively high iso and freezing cold between 10-40 below zero, some luminance noise reduction was also applied in LR5. A terrific resource was a book I read by an Alaskan based photographer Patrick Enders called "How to Photograph the Northern Lights" . I have more to share and this is my first time shooting the Aurora so any and all comments are welcome and appreciated. They were shot with no moon so I have kept them dark to try and represent the actual light that was present, but am curious to know if you feel I need bring them up at all.
Thanks for viewing, Dean
