p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Ferruginous Hawk

This guy was willing to sit for around a minute, which let me try and practice a few shots. I didn't have all my settings perfect for a bird versus bighorns (which I was really looking for). Still I like these photos and thought I'd share. I wish I would have had a faster shutter speed for the wing tips though...

Just a fence sitter.

Not perfect, but a colorful guy in a stark wintery landscape.
Just edited to add the proper name.
What a cool bird!

Good looking set Craig. The last one is my pick of the set. Too bad about the wing clip.

Thanks guys!

Sorry about two things, the shutter speed and the wing clip. I had suddenly switched to the 1.2x crop when he took off, and in the viewfinder it looked OK. But, best not to use this mode for me. I only get a good chance like this once a year or so.

Very nice Craig. You have to love it when they let you have a few minutes of their time.

Great shots. Too bad about the tips but doesn't really ruin the shot at all. Don't worry about the shutter, not sure any SS would have stopped the wingtip blur completely during a takeoff. That said, ISO 125? I never go below ISO 640 for wildlife on these newer sensors as there is no point...would have given you a bit more leeway in aperture settings for DOF and of course you could have easily maxed out the shutter speed if you'd wanted to.

On my monitor they appear a bit too saturated for my taste in the oranges. But again that is always a personal choice, just how I see it from my couch

Great set overall,
TFS

Thanks again!
And thanks for the ID too Keith!
I wasn't sure what it was... Sitting on the post it looked really big.

Ferruginous Hawk?
The largest North American hawk.
That explains a lot. It looked huge for a hawk, with a big broad chest.

That is a beautiful hawk and a lovely perch. Great sighting. My only tip is always be set for the IF shot; the money shot. It often means backing off to avoid wing clip and getting SS to at least 1/2000!
That really is a nice looking hawk. Don

Natural color or a bit of selective saturation bump?
