p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Three pieces of hair

Last week, I was asked to look at a "hair project" put together by a hair designer Olleah. She needed some pictures for an entry into a contest that will be adjudicated in July ... however the entry must be completed and submitted by the first week of February. Obviously this was a rush project that I was not really prepared for - and there was essentially no budget - not even for a studio rental As a result we shot in a friends basement room - fortunately it was clean, without furniture. Doing a TF project is always a pain - however I did get a free lunch and some wine !!!!

The shoot was done a week ago - three girls to be shot on one day. It was quite an ordeal for me. Since the hair pieces were very complex, we decided to shoot simple open light to try to reveal the hair structure with clarity and without any attempt at dramatic posing of the three amateur models (friends of the hair designer). I don't know if I succeeded.

These three pictures are my attempt to accomplish the needed images. Of course, these are not the images that are being submitted - just three other representative shots of the pieces.

This first piece had LED lights distributed in the hair. To allow the LED to actually show, I decided to shoot at a high ISO and relatively wide aperture and the flashes were set to very low output. It almost worked as hoped

I really dig #2. #1 has a strange color/shadow thing going on her camera-left side. FWIW

2 is really a nice image.

I think you did a great job on 1 also, considering how challenging shooting that "design" must have been.

3 is not really doing it for me. It's a great image technically. I just don't care for the pose.

I was asked to do something similar a few years ago. The shoot had to take place in the hair salon, as they were making changes on the fly. Lighting and background were problematic, due to space limitations.

Comparatively speaking, these are superior to my results, so you should be pleased Tony!

#2 is great with a somewhat ethereal feel, #1 is also great, in a very different way and #3 is the weakest, as was pointed out, due to the uncomfortable looking pose.

It's amazing what can be accomplished when we're under pressure!
