I have 55/2.8 Ai-S that I am very happy with on my D700. However for various reasons I have found myself researching would 60mm AF-D or AF-S perform better than my 55/2.8 on D800(E) (I don't have D800 yet) and if yes which one of the variants, AF-D or AF-S, would be better than the other. Unfortunately combing the Web didn't return anything. So did any of you compare these lenses on D800/E and if yes could you please share the results?

The 60mm F2.8 AFS has slightly better bokeh than the AFD lens. The latter has a recessed front element which helps prevent flare without needing to use the hood. Apparently the AFD lens is a bit soft at distance at wide apertures. The focus on the AFD lens is relatively stiff, whereas the AFS lens is perhaps too free.

I find both lenses provide nice contrasty images. The only reason I 'upgraded' is that the rear lens group on my AFD lens is delaminating.

Thank you LeifG! Is your experience with both confirming Photozone's results that are saying AF-S vignettes more and is less sharp in corners? Do you happen to know how either one of them compares to 55 Ai-S?

I only use them stopped down, almost always for close ups, so I cannot answer your questions, sorry.

Nikon 60mm G Micro was my best (and sharpest) lens on D800E

Nick, thank you for your input. I have briefly tried 60 G yesterday and unfortunately manual focusing experience with it left me disappointed.

Do you manual focus with the viewfinder or live view? Live view is the only way to manually focus reliably with any dSLR...except maybe the Df with its split screens.

For fine work that experience does leave a lot to be desired - you pretty much HAVE to create a custom picture setting with the sharpness and contrast sliders turned WAAAAY up in order to do much good at all. Here's a link to a youtube video showing the results that somebody posted not too long ago:

In addition, I pretty much always just use the D800 in the studio, mostly shooting "tethered" and using either a laptop or a tablet for the focusing - a big screen helps a lot.

Good Luck,

rkg

Df with what? What do you mean by split screens?
