I'd like to tuck a D600 + 24-120 in the backpack I carry day to day. At minimum I'd like it padded on all sides and be able to simply reach down and grab it from the top. Ideally, it would also have a padded top/flap so the camera is 100% enclosed and things could be placed on top of it.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

So...you'd like to be able to simply reach down and grab, it but then things could be placed on top of it? I not sure I follow.

Basically, top opening. If nothing else is in the main compartment, I'd like reach down and grab access. First choice would be something with a top flap so I could put things on top of it if need be, versus an "open" cube that would have the camera exposed on the top side.

Thats the only recommendation I can give. Though I'd be very interested if you find an alternative solution

Something like this, but obviously smaller. Just need camera + attached lens:

I don't have any personal experience with f-stop products though I hear good things.

Perhaps one of their ICUs (Internal Camera Units) would fit the bill:

Crumpler also has a couple of sizes of their Camera Pouches:

Perfect, I think either the f-Stop ICU's or the Crumpler Haven will do the trick!

I have a PacSafe insert and a MountainSmith insert. The PacSafe is larger and so gets used with my full size pack whilst the MountainSmith lives in a CamelBak that lives in the back of my vehicle. Both are nice.

Peace,

Todd

you'd have to leave the ICU unzipped if you wanted to just reach in & grab it. I'd be more inclined to get a Think tank holster bag, more versatile.

Take a look at the Deuter Act 32 backpack. It has both a top and back opening. This standard backpack sports an internal metal frame and excellent hip belts, far superior to nearly all photo backs. Just add the cube or icu to make an excellent photo pack.
