If you are interested in the Canon 200/2 or 800/5.6 they are available now on the refurbished website. I have never seen them listed there though I've only been looking the last couple years.

I think that is the first time I've ever heard of those two being on there. Only the 300II and 400DO have been there before.

That 200 sure would look nice on the end of my 5D3! Unfortunately, food also looks good on the table for the next 6 months or so...

Food's overrated, Tom. Water, vitamins and an occasional protein supplement can get you through six months, no problem .

The 200/2 is very tempting but I need a new computer/monitor pretty badly so that is occupying any disposable income at the moment.

Although I don't see any 200 f/2 on sale here, the 800mm comes used around $9,000. I don't see paying the extra couple grand for a warranty.

There is someone in the world saying $12,000 for a car? My house is even cheaper

Not sure whether to e-hug you or place upon you the curse of a thousand rashes ... I just pulled the trigger on a re-furb 200 2.0. No possible way to justify this purchase on need. Serious amateur here who should spend the $ on Photoshop classes and a 5DIII. The allure of a "new" 2.0 got me - completely seduced!
We shall see how much better it is than my 200 2.8L II ... I'm trying to shoot garden variety birds, including humming birds, in acrobatic flight. Having a tough time freezing moving wings under a forest canopy at 1600 ISO with my 5DII.

What specific performance benefits would it take to make you pay 10x for a one stop advantage?

For completely freezing very fast motion like hummingbird wings and catching songbirds in flight, you'll need to rely on the use of flash.

If you missed the 200 2.0 refurb sale, I'll sell you the one I got!

OK - so I'm a hair trigger impulse buyer who loves to try fast glass. Guilty as charged. Love it - man oh man, it's drop dead gorgeous and fun to use. However, I'm slowly coming to realize this isn't the right focal length for me. It does deliver the dreamy bokeh as described. Unfortunately my clientele don't seem sufficiently impressed with these results over either my 200 2.8L or 70-200 2.8.

So if you are interested check out my post on the buy & sell forum.

3/1/14 Update: Uh, I stand corrected. Shot a "Show Choir" competition with two other shooters - one using a 70-200 2.8 VII and 24-70 VII; the other using Nikon's 70-200 2.8. We took 9,000 shots. After extensive comparison, the 200 2.0 was clearly heads and shoulders above. Impressively, parents and students spotted the differences when reviewing images on monitors set up just outside the theater.

Time to withdraw that from the B&S forum.

Probably a lot to be said for this. The criteria used by my clients always amazes me and never has anything to do with IQ/bokeh/sharpness. As a photographer and a gearhead I see a very different image then they do.

Maybe it is a "selfish" lens. True confession: I bought it just for me. And even though I was going through a bit of buyer's remorse there for a while, this thing continues to impress. I'm very glad to have it, if only for a while! I got into photography to make beautiful images of people, places, animals and things that are important to me. This lens presents those in ways like nothing else has. It isn't a "practical" purchase, not a "value" lens. It's an indulgence. Ahhhh .... bokeh supreme!

I check the website every day and have not seen it yet. Could well be a testament to the fact that everyone that has it is satisfied.
