p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · I think my flash is dying... Canon 40D

I rarely use my flash on my old 40D and the last time I did, I noticed that there is barely any light emitting from it and the pictures turn out dark. I have googled this but can't find an explanation. To me my flash is dying... but not sure that is really the case.

I have a 6D on the way to me and I would like to figure out what the problem is with the flash before I try and sell it... at least so the buyer is aware.

Thanks so much!

Have you checked that your flash exposure compensation isn't turned all the way down on the 40D ?

I believe so... Under built in flash composition I have it at the mark just past center.

Is it popping up all the way? Does it get brighter after a couple of shots?

It pops up all the way but it's very light... and does not get brighter. It barely emits any light.

I don't know for sure but would guess the capacitor that stores the energy to fire the flash is going/gone bad.
It may not effect the resale value that much as many never use that flash.

Just pitch it as a perfect optical trigger--fires your slaves but won't affect exposure--custom mod

Can you set the flash to manual and try firing it at full power? Its been many years since I have used a camera with a built in flash so Im not sure if this is an option.
