I must admit that I did use the pupped warp tool to exaggerate the tree base even further.
The toning was done in camera raw with split toning on the shadows only.
Thanks for looking. Comments are always welcome.

That almost sounds like a confession, but using any tool is part of a valid process in creating the image you visualize--and you had some good ideas with this shot. Nice work.

Thank you Tom.
I upgraded my photoshop version, watch videos and try to absorb new techniques.
I'm glad you like the image.

Thank you for the comment, Sandra.
I always try to get it right in camera. So if I do something in post that alters the reality of the image I feel that I should mention it.
I guess you are right but ... I'm complicated.

Chris, this reminds me of an enormous fir on a hillside near our house. It stands in a mixed forest, fairly dense in that spot, and you can't see the top when standing at the tree's base. From our house it's visible, the tallest tree among several older ones. I like your take on this, the gritty feel is appropriate. What kind of tree is it?

Thank you Bill for the personal note.
I guess it's a scots pine as they are fairly common around here and the needles on the ground seem to fit as well.
But I'm no tree expert. I will add the color version.
