The A7R teardown by Roger Cicala
Roger Cicala at LensRentals.com just posted a Sony A7R teardown.

Here is an excerpt:

"Ever since we first tested a Sony A7R, we were dying to take a look under the hood. Say what you will about Sony as a company, but they create some of the most elegantly-engineered camera bodies we’ve seen. Plus, the A7R is something of a groundbreaking camera, and we wanted to see how they crammed all that stuff into its little body. Oh, and finally, we’ve wanted a closer look at how thick the cover glass over the A7R’s sensor is, since there is some evidence that it may affect the edge performance of certain adapted lenses."

+1

Do not try this at home. This post was made by semi-trained, semi-professional repair technicians who sort of know what they’re doing.
The following blog post contains graphic images of the inside of a very nice camera. If such things make you squeamish, don’t read further.
No cameras were harmed in the making of this blog post. The camera has been fully reassembled and is functioning normally.

'so in the end how thick was the cover glass??'

...and what is a ballpark quote for replacing the cover glass?

I suppose they couldn't measure the thickness because they couldn't remove the clips and didn't want to force it.

Thanks Roger! Great teardown article.
How easy to replace noisy shutter module with a more silent one? Or are these customized to each camera model?
Ok, who is going to remove their sensor top glass and test some m lenses on it?

Brilliant work! This gives me a better opinion of Sony! I have to admit. They sure know how to engineer stuff. Too bad their marketing department is not as good.

The cover glass was just under 1.5mm thick (glass plus retaining clip was 1.5). A 5D II by comparison is 0.75mm

Still better than fuji's 3mm (at least that's what I remember reading somewhere, possibly Lloyd's blog)
Do we know how thick is on an M9?
M240?

Fantastic and detailed teardown from Roger and Aaron.

Were any photos taken off the sensor assembly/filter stack elements - given that the cover-glass holder was eventually removed?

Cool, happy to see that it's very modular so repairs should be cheaper

Roger, did the shutter mechanism have any labels or markings saying "Pentax 6x7", by any chance?

...for Sony, yes. Let's see how much of the savings is passed on to the customer.

Julian, I couldn't get the cover glass holder off: trying to undo the clips it started flexing and I feared cracking the glass. When I get a scratched one I'll cut the clips and take it off that way to experiment.

...all you have to do is notice the sync speed of the A7R is not 1/30 sec.

After I posted that, I realized there probably aren't many people on this forum old enough to understand the reference...
