DxOmark reviews Sony FE 55mm 1.8 ZA: Outstanding!
DXOmark published the full Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens test and the results are quite impressive.

"In fact, the Zeiss Sonnar has similarly high peak sharpness and outstanding uniformity with less than 5% loss in sharpness across the field at any given aperture value. Transmission is outstanding but while both distortion and chromatic aberration are quite well controlled, some slight CA is evident throughout the aperture range though it decreases when stopping down.
On paper at least the Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm f1.8 ZA may seem somewhat unadventurous and over-priced given the f1.8 maximum aperture. In reality the lens is a bright 1.8TStops, and image quality is outstanding. Even the $1,000 price seems quite reasonable."

I told you many times it's a mini Otus

This dos not surprise me. This lens is optically superb, even wide open I find. Very comparable to the Sigma 35 1.4 and Zeiss 135 1.8 and Makro 100 ZF, though not quite as exotic.

I call it "Lotus Lite"

From f/4 to f/8 it is actually sharper than the Otus, but of course from f/1.4 to f/2.8 the Otus is just amazingly sharp and there is no need to stop it down.

Yea the 55 FE has been a pleasant surprise, a superb lens. Expectations for the FE 24-70 f/4 are now high

Interesting that the T stop is 1.8 on the A7r for the FE 55 and the T stop of the Otus is only 1.7 on the D800. That's really close as far as actual light transmission. What I don't quite get is why the Otus has a faster T stop on many Canon bodies and on some of the other Nikon's as well.

Depends on the light angle exiting the lens in combination with the microlens architecture of the sensor. See this article: DxOMark f-stop blues.

Indeed. I would guess that microlens density and angle has an effect on the max aperture.
Also interesting is that according to the exif, the FE is a f/1.7.

I'm not sure that's true. The only 36MP sensor they've tested the Otus on is the D800 (has AA filter), whereas the FE was tested on the A7r (no AA filter). This affects DxO's "perceptual MP" results. To compare, here is one of the few lenses they've tested on both a D800 and D800E:

Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) MACRO
D800: 15 P-Mpix
D800E: 21 P-Mpix

Thanks very much and nice article reference. I didn't realize that DxOmark's T-stop reading was an "effective" T-stop measurement with lens+camera. I thought it was the traditional T-stop light transmission of the lens only. That completely explains it.

I was going to say they should have tested the FE 55 on the A7. That would have been very helpful.

The Otus might actually test worse on the A7r, depending on the silly adapter variable!

...maybe if it had better bokeh.
I still don't really like the rendering of the 55/1.8 FE. It's very punchy with often harsh contrasty double-lined bokeh. A matter of taste of course, many people go crazy about supersharp lenses.

I am sure that it's not true.

Such results just demonstrate the limitations of these lens tests and comparisons.

I confess that I like the bokeh of the ZM 50 more, but on the other hand, the 3D pop of the FE is just amazing.

I think the more you use it the more you will like it. It takes time to really know a lens and exploit its strengths.

Now that's not really fair. You, or was it Joachim, are sitting on real K8 MTF measurements and do not share them with us

This said, if I recall correctly, Joachim did mention the FE was very close to the Otus.

I cannot share the data in my possession, but theSuede mentioned that he could not share the measurements before a certain magazine is out. That sounds like it's a matter of time.

It surprises me that the "tests" of DXOmark are accepted without any questions about the correctness. Not only here but on more forums.

When I see their "test" and ranking of the Zeiss ZF/ZE 21/2.8 I know enough: I can't take this seriously.

Most likely more issue of A7 and A7r. Both of them are not following EXIF standard, EXIF segment field MaxApertureValue is expressed as normal number, even standard defines this field (like most "Value" fields) to use APEX numbering system. Due to this if software maker haven't taken into account that some manufacturers don't follow standards will show wrong maximum aperture. At least Apple Aperture doesn't know that Sony engineers were not competent enough to follow standards.

A7r:
samulis-mini:ready samu$ exiftool -s -G -EXIF:MaxApertureValue 20140118_124418_FE55F1.8\@f2.8_1per50s_ISO100_A7r.jpg
[EXIF] MaxApertureValue : 1.8
samulis-mini:ready samu$ exiftool -n -s -G -EXIF:MaxApertureValue 20140118_124418_FE55F1.8\@f2.8_1per50s_ISO100_A7r.jpg
[EXIF] MaxApertureValue : 1.80000000242677

This is not new to Sony, they did skip reading standards already some years ago... (A850 + 2.8/24-70ZA):

[EXIF] MaxApertureValue : 2.8

There was a Pc Mag test using imatest a month back that showed it wasn't anywhere close to an Otus. I don't care if it can't match the 0tus. For $1K, it is still a spectacular lens, with AF to boot! I can't wait to see more FE Zeiss primes.
