Here's mine. The lens was bought in 2010 and the Extender in 2011.

My 70-200 II is the same color as yours, "putty". Lens was purchased new in 2011. The new (to me), 1.4X TC VIII that I recently purchased, is the 'grayish' color.

The Mk II lens and 1.4X TC VIII do not match in color.

There is no additional communication at all if you were to use something like a 1D Mk IV with something like an EF 500mm f/4L IS II - between the converter chip and lens.

This Canon link implies you might be wrong about that:
http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2014/ef_extenders_pt2.shtml?categoryId=12

The way I read it, the Mk III TC's will have greater AF accuracy with any new generation Mk II Super-Tele, regardless of which camera is attached.

"Updated CPU and electronics to provide greater AF accuracy when used with most recent EF “version II” IS-series super telephoto lenses"

I got my 70-200 mk II at same time w / 7 D [ package deal .]
The new 2X III came out / was in store a few months later .
The 2 X III worked better in store than the 2 X II . [ 7 D + 70-200 MKII +2 X III ]
I could have gotten both the 2X II and the 1.4 II for a little more than the 2 X III
I only have 2 " whites " , the 2 X III only fits on one , but the colors don't match .
The color of the 2 X III did not match a new 100-400 at the time - salesman really wanted me to get the 100-400 instead --

Mike, the dead giveaway is the second sentence in red. Serial number detection does not work on 7d or mkiv. Neither does the af improvement.

I don't really care about serial number detection. I only care about improved Auto Focus.

The Canon press releases dating back to 2010 all talk about Improved Auto Focus when using the Version III Extenders with the Version II Super-Tele's due to the updated CPU and electronic communication between the lens and the Extender. Please note that this is long before the release of the 5D Mk III or 1Dx.

So it stands to reason that you don't need 5D Mk III or 1Dx to take advantage of the Version III Extender electronics. Therefore you will get the improved AF even when using a 7D or 1D Mk IV.

Are you saying that is not true?

As I read the most recent posts above, it seems that the 1.4X TC VIII will only work best with these lenses:

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/lenses-flashes/super-telephoto-lenses

...improvements in AF, as well as, communication by relaying information and data with these specific lenses ONLY. The 70-200 MkII 2.8 is not listed in the link and I didn't dive deep into serial numbers for the specific camera bodies that the TC VIII can effectively communicate with. It seems, Andrew J is right. I suppose, I could have gotten away with a VII TC then and called it a day? Hmmmmmm

That link you quoted is not correct. As I understand it there are only 4 lenses lenses that qualify as "Series II Supertelephoto" http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2011/updates_supertelephoto_article.shtml

EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM
EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM
EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM
EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM

The new 200-400mm f/4 IS 1.4x also is recommended to be used with Version III Extenders only.

Super-Telephoto = any lens 300mm or above so the 70-200 will never show up on that list.

You might want to read these

Roy Morales wrote:
Depending on what you read - like here the III model give closer focusing - read till you find it
http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2011/updates_supertelephoto_article.shtml

Here it says it won't change focusing distance , slow down AF , but lens glass does not move as much so speed is about the same
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-Extender-EF-1.4x-III-Review.aspx

Here it says it will work on 70-200 lenses , but slows down AF
http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2014/ef_extenders_pt2.shtml

Really confusing , I bought one , works fine on my 70-200 mk II - AF slows down in lower light .

I snagged that link off the Super Telephoto tab on the Canon site,... my mistake, it was not "Series II", apologies for that.
