Really enjoying backyard birding. Currently have the 1D mark IV which has been super so far. But In this case I'm not focal length limited. And FPS do not matter. Question is how much better ISO in stops is the 5DIII? Main objective is ISO and pixels on the portrait. Is the 5DIII a good choice for this? Tanx.

In my use...the 5DMKIII is about 1 stop better ISO use.

Based on what you stated about not being focal length limited or FPS limited...then yes
the 5DMKIII would be a great option.

I agree the 5d would be good for you. If you don't need pro autofocus, the 6d might be slightly better at high ISO than even the 5d3 and substantially less expensive.

2nd the 6D rec if ISO is more of a concern than AF. If you are not trying to track fast moving small birds, and just going for perched / feeder shots. You will be more than happy with the center point on the 6D. Has slightly less MP, but those pixels sure are yummy! And the high ISO is outstanding.
