p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos

I'm headed to SE Asia for a month in February. I'm trying to decide what to pair with my 5D III. For sure I'll be taking my 24-105, and thinking that's all I'll take. But I have the fabulous 70-200 f/4 IS, as well as the 135 f/2 and 35 f/2.

Thinking of buying the new 100 f/2.8 macro IS to replace the 135 and 70-200.

I intend to shoot portraits (street shooting) and landscapes, and delve into flowers etc. And I want to travel LIGHT!!

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance....

Get an EF 40/2.8 STM for the streets. Cheap as dirt. Weighs less than a palm-full of dirt. Top of the line IQ.

Take the 24-105/4L IS and 70-200/4L IS, plus get a 1.4x II or III Extender, and a Canon 77mm 500D close up auxiliary lens.

24-70 F4 (not 2.8) plus 135 f2. This zoom has decent macro capabilities and is remarkably light and more compact than the 24-105.

The 24-105 is my general purpose travel lens. The 70-200 f4 IS is secondary/optional if you think you'd need it. A 12, 20, or 24 mm extension tube weighs very little and will give you more macro ability with either lens. Other lenses are nice, but unless you have a specific purpose for it or just want to buy it well, ...

The first rule of traveling light is making sure everything you bring serves a necessary purpose.

That said, my 2nd lens is a 100-400 with 1.4x because, if I need more than 100, I probably need more than 200. But mind, I feel it on my back and hassling airline carry-on weight restrictions.

This is another macro option, but, you can get a 58 mm 500D and 67 to 58 step down ring for cheaper and lighter. Works very well with out vignetting on the 70-200 f4.

If you like street photography I would recommend an ultra wide zoom like the 16-35.
My travel kit now is: 6D / 16-35 / 35 1.4 / 24-105 / 135 2.0
I used to take the 70-200, but found it too conspicuous and bulky.
A fast prime can come very handy in dark temples.
3 beautiful countries you are going to, Enjoy !

I'd definitely want to pick up a fast 35- maybe check out Samyang's, it's cheap and sharp. Otherwise, the 24-105L focuses pretty closely, and extension tubes are both light and cheap.

I was really pleasantly surprised by the 40 pancake. Creams my 24-105L at 40. I'm headed to SE Asia and I'm tempted to just bring the 40. Though I'll probably be kicking myself.

If all you really want to take is the 40, I would just rather pick up a used x100 and be done with it. Perfect for street photography and pure joy to travel with.

As someone who uses an x100 and a 6D with the 40mm, I say take both
The X100 kind of falls apart beyond Iso 1600...

I was in Cambodia and southern Vietnam last year ( and going back to Northern Vietnam & Laos this year - cant wait!!). Most of what I did was street shooting

Anyway - my three lenses were - 24mm 1.4L, 50mm 1.2L and 70-200 2.8L

The least used was the 70-200 and the most was the 24mm

Here are a few samples:

My thinking this year is to leave the 70-200 at home and take a sigma 150mm f2.8L macro instead.

Whatever you bring, you are going to have a ball - there are possibilities everywhere

I thought about this, but it meant buying another camera (my recent Canon purchases and this trip have left my bank account low). Also, I determined I might not be that happy unless I sprung for the X100s, which is clearly beyond my budget at the moment. I still may pick up a x100 if I find it on the cheap.

Gerry, those are great shots, BTW. Nice work.

Pick up a EOS M for times when the full arsenal of a DSLR might be a little too imposing, super cheap and the 22mm f2 is a fantastic lens.

There have been some pretty inciting deals on the M lately.

Between the M and a used X100...it's a no brainer, go with the X100. The viewfinder alone is well worth any small price differences.

Having just been in Hong Kong and taking shots on the street, I wished I had my longer lens than just the 24-105 I brought. Could have easily used the 70-200. Take it. You will glad you did.
