Is this required for TCs?

Or put another way, say for example you've MA'ed your 400mm lens to your camera body. Will there be any benefit of performing the micro-adjustment again if you mount a 1.4X TC with the same lens?

Just curious.

Yes, it makes a real difference and the cameras remember your lens+converter combos as well.

It's as required as doing MAs in the first place. Some people don't bother (or don't have cameras that allow it), others can't live without. Since MA with TC is completely separate from without TC, you should do both.

YES, YES, YES.... a lot of my lenses require almost zero MA as a native lens but as I add on my 1.4 and then 2.0TC, the MA value gets worse with each usually. You definitely want to MA with each combo. The camera will register the TC and remember them. The newest cameras even support different SNs for multiple TCs (as some have 2 copies of a 1.4TC).

Yes. And I'll add another question I've personally wondered about regarding this subject. Do people MA to a wide open TC (ie f5.6 on a f4) or stop down a bit?

i try to shoot my 600mm with or without the 1.4 in the 7.1 range so thats what i did my MAs at.. so now if it's open a little, or closed a little it still shoots great

Usually it is always recommended to do it wide open because the software needs as narrow of a DOF as it can get to actually see a difference. However, if you always shoot at a particular aperture then MAs at that f-stop may be best but as you stop down, MA becomes less critical because of the DOF....this also applies to shooting at greater distances....the DOF increases and MA becomes less important.

Also if you shoot in AI Servo mostly....MA makes almost no impact as the servo drive steps are often more variable than any normal type of MA adjustment.

I do my AFMA tests with the lens wide open. I also test/adjust all likely Extender combinations.

Many long lenses have focus shift. My 500/f4L moved 5 points when stopped down 2/3 of a stop and so does my 600/f4L. So I always test wide open and stopped down. BTW, focus shift is why so many are unhappy wth LensAlign which must be done wide open.

I never realized this with the 600mm. I would suppose if you are smack in the middle of your dof at f4, then five points off stopped down may not matter that much? Guess it is worth knowing at least so you can make a conscious decision about it. My images seemed sharp enough stopped down, so I never bothered to check. I am usually wide open anyway to favor shutter speed and iso.
