LensRentals: Tamron 150-600 Telezoom Shootout
Roger at LensRentals.com posted a comparison test between the new Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 VC against the older Tamron 200-500mm, Sigma 50-500mm OS, and Canon 100-400 IS lenses.

Roger concludes:
"My summary would be that the selection between a Tamron 150-600, Canon 100-400 IS, and Sigma 50-500 OS should be made on criteria other than MTF 50. There are some minor differences in resolution, but nothing that makes one clearly better than another. Price, weight, autofocus accuracy, effectiveness of vibration control, and a number of other factors (did I mention price?) are more important considerations when choosing among these lenses"

Dustin Abbott posted a detailed review on this lens. He calls it "Tamron’s Game Changer".

The Tamron looks like a great option and I'm really excited to see how Canon answers for it. The 100-400 is like the gateway drug of telephotos for Canon (it was for me) and they can't afford to just let that share of the market go without a fight.

The average is a lot less than the center, which is not unusual, but how quickly does the performance deteriorate off axis?

Many folks are concerned about the performance of the new Tamron 150-600mm f/6.3 tele-zoom lens at the long end of the zoom range. The MTF numbers suggest that performance falls off pretty rapidly above about 500mm.

In my opinion, the 600mm image below does the lens enough justice (in the field) for me:

Tamron 600mm @ f/8, ISO 800, 1/1000th second

Numbers in the lab mean one thing and performance in the field may (or may not) corroborate them.

What does everyone else think of this lens field-tested at 600mm?

I'm really starting to like what I'm seeing out of this lens. Having just invested in a support system, I'm about ready to look a longer focal lengths myself, and right now Tamron seems to have stolen the show from Canon's aging 100-400L!

Dustin Abbotts review, which I read is a touch overly enthusiastic, and unrealistic. From many images I have seen, roger's review, my personal experience with several tarmon lenses, although not this one, my deductions are,
The lens wil be good at 600 and f8. In good light, the lens does well esp for non moving objects. the modern camera high iso has certainly improved greatly, esp on full frame, where very good results can be seen at iso 1600, even 3200 with good processing. it appears that in 150 to 400 range, it will be reasonably close to 100-400L which is quite impressive.
Non of the consumer zoom lenses that go to 400 and beyond are particularly fast focusing. that includes 100-400L, which I consider marginal on my 5d3, for BIF. In fact, which I was shooting hummingbirds, I got more than twice as many in focus images with my 70-300L.
I think this lens may be the new perfect safari lens. For birders, shooting non flying birds, on a tripod, at say 1/300-1/500 sec on a tripod/ monopod, at f8, this will be a good lens also. BIF, I find focus speed is a critical factor.
I would also be interested in focus accuracy. my experience with tamron 24-70 vc has been very disappointing. and this is not something that reikan focal necessariy detects. I test the lens with reikan, and the lens does well on repeated refocus on the same subject. but not so much in the field, on its first focus attempt. I very much doubt the Tamron has solved that riddle. Focus issues will remain the Achilles heel of third party lenses, the precise reason canon is not licensing its focus algorithm to them.

I need to see some better tests. It looks passable in the center, but normally the head of my subjects, especially birds and giraffes, is off to the top/side. It's enough of a challenge with the Canon 100-400 at 400mm that if the Tamron is worse, I'm not sure there is much point in using it. I'm also awaiting AF experiences on the 1D-X before buying a Tamron for testing. If it focuses well enough I will try it on my 1D-X.

From reading the reviews my take is that the lens is good up to 500mm (at f8) and somewhat usable at 600mm (f8) but not great and 600mm is best be avoided.

Canon isn't known for quick "answers" to competitor's new products. They have a plan and churn away slowly at it and that's that. I predict a 100-400 II by 2024...

And most people buying the lens will be happy with results at 600mm because there is no other option in this price range to get better results at 600mm.

I don't like to use the 250-300mm range on my 70-300 non-L, but hey, it's the only lens I have that gets there. Similarly, this Tamron would be my only real hope of getting to 600mm; and I'm sure that I could use some stabilization along with stopping the lens down and some focused post-processing to get good detail in my shots, just like I have to do with the 70-300.

You may be an exception, but I don't believe that this lens is targeted for 1D-X users. Those folks typically purchase or save up for Canon's 200-400mm f/4 with the internal TC. (~$11K).

The Tamron is targeted more towards prosumer photographers or weekend birding photographers, for 1/10th the cost of the Canon lens.

(Yes, ONE TENTH the cost of the Canon glass.)

Wouldn't it be better to just crop a little the image made at 500mm than to use 600mm?
