p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 24-70 II for basketball?

I often shoot basketball from the stanchion with a 1Dx and a Canon 50 f1.2 (exposure settings are typically ISO 6400, f2.8 and 1/800). Last night I tried using the original Canon 24-70 and altho I liked the zoom range, the af seems too slow and the images were too soft. Has anyone tried using the 24-70 II for collegiate basketball or similar fast action under low light conditions? Thanks!

I upgrade from original to Canon 24X70 mark II, a dream come true lens.
My copy of version II is supper sharp and at any aperture from corner to corner from 24mm to 60mm range and auto focus is lighting fast, even shooting in moving subject in low light.
I shots wedding and often shot in low light situation such at reception and inside church, the original 20X70L is really soft at the corner and auto focus is hit and miss in low light shooing and shots with camera body Canon 1D IV.
I would said the version II would serve you well for basketball shot.

Is the first version really that bad?

I was considering selling my 17-40 f/4 and 50 f/1.4 and getting one to use over my 70-200 f/2.8 for basketball.

Jonathan and stempsons, thanks for the replies.

Gome. I won't use it again for basketball--the keeper rate is just too low in my situation. However, that doesn't mean it won't be fine in a different situation.

I'm interested in upgrading to the new 24-70 if it's as sharp and can focus as fast as the 70-200 f2.8 and 50 f1.2 (the two lens I usually use for basketball).

Cheers!
Rick

I recently purchased this lens and I am using it to shoot high school basketball, and to be totally honest, I am getting some of the best shots that I have ever taken.I jusst put this lens on my 5dMK3 and go pick a spot near the basket, and just let the action come to me. This lens is sharp and capable of fast focusing. The gym that I shoot in has really poor lighting, so my iso is usually set at 6400 or 8000 at 1/640 and f2.8. And now my keeper rate has gone up substantially with this lens. I would recommend this baby to anyone!

I just got 24-70 v2 and use it with 5D3 for first time last week for a basketball game. Focus is silent and fast. PM me if you want to look at some photos.

I am renting one this weekend shooting volleyball. I have been using 70-200 F2.8 mk2 with my 5D MK3. Since I am standing on the court 70-200 sometime not wide enough
Will see if this will do. Hope the keep rate will go up

This shot appeared across 2 pages in ESPN the Magazine a few years back, and was taken with the original EF 24-70 f/2.8L on a 1D MkIIn. I found the lens to be sharp and AF fairly quick.

I also used it for a couple years as a remote lens on a 1D MkIII and it worked great.
