p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Portable Continuous Light Sources?

Hey all,

Been getting kind of sick of dragging around strobes or setting up and syncing speedlites whenever I want to do a quick dramatic shot at weddings.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good video light / continuous light source?

Ideally something that fits most of these requirements:

Light, easily portable
Relatively neutral color tone
LED / doesn't suck batteries like crazy
Variable brightness (bright enough to not require a pitch black room)

Something like the Ice Light, but without the absurd price point.

Well I was going to say the Light Panels Croma, but it costs the same as the Ice Light.. I love it though! It has the Ice Light beat IMO because you can adjust the color temp. Catch lights in the eyes aren't as cool though..

Eh, fair enough.

One thing I've seen is that LED lights screw with skin tones and color accuracy a lot. I've never used them...is it bad enough that it's worth just going back to tungsten?

I have yet to find a continuous light source that provides a high quality of light. Nearly all of them leave some level of nasty color cast to the image which makes achieving quality color problematic.

I use a couple (rather inexpensive) Sony video lights which are tungsten based and have pretty good color. They come in right at 3000K and usually balance pretty well with low ambient lighting. They have a slight color cast on the red/green spectrum, but nothing terrible.

I've only used one LED light before and it was one of those $40 Amazon cheapies. The color was hysterically terrible. I think I used it for literally 5 frames, then boxed it and sold it.

I've got my eyes on a Lowel GL-1, but can't quite bring myself to swing the price.

Gotcha, good thoughts. I have an old Lowell ID light which I may try to dust off...otherwise, I might have to humble myself and rent the Ice Light just try something.

I have one of these...
http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Barndoor-Display-Removable-Diffusion/dp/B00AUK79F4
You can gel it really easily because of the magnets. It also will accept Sony V mount Lithium Batteries. I have one battery and it will last about 8 hours at full power if charged all the way. It produces a reasonable amount of light but not as much as something like a Keno Flex.
It is dim-able and produces really nice light that is consistent and does not give of a horrible color cast.
Here are some examples...
