Out shooting yesterday. Very harsh lighting at sunset. Caught site of this duck in the distance. Its beak was malformed. I wonder if this is a birth defect due to insecticides, pesticides etc.
Would appreciate any explanations, suggestions or speculations.
Thanks
Saba

Is it a northern shovler?

Looks to me like it tried to take the remote away from its mate Saba. ~ Ron

Don't think that is a shoveler. Wrong colors. Interesting shot Saba. Cannot help you with the beak defect.

Google deformed beak. Apparently this is an increasing problem in certain areas. Where did you take the photo? In my quick online search, I couldn't find any definitive explanation.

Hello John,
Thank you for your interest. I took the photo in the "Celery Fields" on Proctor road, Sarasota, Florida just east of the I75. I think it is due to pesticides because a similar effect was observed on birds of prey over 30 years ago. It was the result of DDT usage.
Once again, Thanks for your interest
