Wasn't this similar to something suggested here? i.e. focus using live view and then micro adjust until both AFs match?

There is the Dot Tune method. I believe it is included in Magic Lantern as an automatic process.

It's about time! Perhaps those new dual pixels can be put to some use for still photography after all.

Why? Does Nikon have a similar patent?

If the 70D is any indication, DPAF may be a revolution for a number of types of photography. Shooting portraiture with wide-aperture lenses wide open, at least in decent light, stands out at the top of the list; especially for a DPAF-equipped full-frame camera.

For sure the endgame is sensor-based AF and Canon has great technology with the 70D. Nikon's hybrid approach on the Nikon 1 works well too but I'm not sure how well that will scale vs the 70D's implementation.

No, because we didn't get live-view or UDMA card slots until Nikon had them.

How are those relevant to AF? Nikon has had many firsts in SLRs, but so have Canon, Olympus, Minolta, Pentax, etc. Canon has been particularly a leader in the area of AF.

I wish they'd patent an Ezy-Kleen viewfinder.

But they were also leaders of tight market segmentation by AF, and it was thanks to Nikon (D300, D700) that Canon's non-1D bodies got finally better AF than 9pt retro-2000 one. Therefore it's not unreasonable for some to expect Nikon to make the first move, it seems.

It is said Canon already have a product name for that. They would name it .Tune (read dot tune)!
