I thought I'd post a practical review of this lens. I thought I would try to add a different perspective to those excellent technical reviews done by others. I hope you find it useful.

I bought a bunch of stuff and one lens was the 15-85 along with the 40D. I was so impressed with the lens I tried to convince my sister to buy it for her T3i but she likes her super zoom 18-270 because she doesn't have to keep changing lenses. If I didn't have full frame I never would have sold it.

Hey Campy. I've heard good reviews of the 18-270 (I'm assuming that's a Tamron lens) but I like the extra width that the 15-85 offers and as a general purpose lens, 85mm is long enough for me. I've been happy with it. For more serious wildlife/nature shots, I have my L glass to rely on. Now if only I could pair it with a 7D MkII....maybe 2014 will be the year.

Nice review, I'm looking for a mid range zoom to add to my 10-22, both the 15-85 and 17-55 look great, now to decide if I need f2.8. Thanks for your experiences/images, they give much to think on

Its a real great lens, I still have mine sitting around, this thread reminds me I need to but it on B&S because I shoot with a 6D now. IMO its easily the equal of the 24-105L, I found the IS better and the lens a bit sharper at the long end. I will miss it, its a great focal length.

My fav zoom on APS and love the post industrial gothic cosmetics of this lens. Well, it basically resembles a travel mug...

Jerry,

I've not shot with that 17-55/2.8 but I debated between those two. The 10-22 is a great lens and I own it as well. Those are the only two ef-s lenses I own or plan on purchasing because they are limited to 1.6x bodies. But they are excellent and I'm happy to have them. The reason I considered the 17-55 was for portraits but then I realized I could rely on my 50/1.8 or 70-200/2.8 if I got serious about portrait work. What I really wanted was a general purpose/walk around lens I could take on outings with the family. I've had quite a few outings where fam is at a nature park but I'm being "dad"...not "photographer" so I needed a lens that can capture a scenic to take advantage of a given location on a given day, not a planned photo outing. The ff equivalent reach of 24-136 was a sweet spot and the reason I made that decision. Hope that helps.

Kevin

I've been tempted by the 6D but I'm waiting to see what 2014 brings in the way of cameras. I think the 6D with a few more cross-type sensors would be ideal. Give me the 7D cross-type sensors, along with that awesome center cross-type of the 6D and I'd be all over it. I'm really holding out for the 7D MkII in hopes that 2014 is the year...the 6D as is would be sufficient for landscapes and portraits...but more cross-type sensors would be desired.

In my group, I'm one of a hand full of Canon shooters. The one lens the Nikon guys lust after, more than any, is the 15-85.

I wonder how EF 15-85 compares to ZA 16-80.

Never used any of the zeiss optics...but those that do really have good things to say. If you could live with the manual focus, then you would probably be happy.

Mirkco, are you using a 16-80 zeiss for those ballet shots on your flickr page.

I own both 15-85 & 17-55 .. both produce outstanding images.

15-85 daytime walkaround..

17-55 for all other occasions.

I've used the 15-85 for outdoor portraits and was pleased with it. But I'm with you on the 17-55 given the f/2.8 aperture if I were to do a lot of portraiture work.
