I've had my 7D for about a year now and mostly use Av or M when shooting my son's
soccer games. I recently began experimenting with the custom functions, but there is one
thing that still confuses me. I can set the functions to C1, C2 or C3, but is it possible
to apply these functions to Av, Tv, M, or P, if so how or do I shoot with the dial set to C1 etc?

Cfn are settings that apply in any mode

C1,C2,C3 are a way of saving an entire camera setup.

Including the mode (Tv, Av) and the current Custom functions.

You can set the camera to focus priority, mirror lockup etc in Av then save this to C1, then in Av change it back.

Then a simple switch to C1 gts you that setup again, but only when you are in C1

C1 , 2 , 3 are very use full . Like C 1 right now is set at 1000 ISO , 1/500 . C2 Is at 1600 , 1/320 - both for lower light at a wedding . burst mode .

Yep, the C slots are very useful. I have C2 set as my 'sports' mode - Av mode with AI Servo focussing, cluster of AF points, high speed continuous shooting, back button AF etc. I can switch to it whenever I have a moving subject (kids running around, bride walking down the aisle etc)

To save something to a C slot, just select all the settings you want to save (eg mode dial in Av mode etc), then under the Setup menu choose Custom Shooting Mode > Register Settings

Thanks again all for the info....much appreciated.

**scottam10** - If I may ask, why do you have Av mode set for sports? Couldn't you
use Tv where you can select the shutter speed based on how fast the subject is moving?

Depending on sport , they may move to shade , someone under darker area - ETC - nice to have when needed .

Yep, you could choose Tv, that's probably a better idea for fast-moving subjects

After playing with the CFn for a few days and reading what others have used, I found that the
following are giving me decent results when shooting my son's soccer games:

C.Fn III: Autofocus Drive (Mode set to Tv)
1 - AI Servo tracking Sensitivity: Set to -1
2 - AI Servo 1st/2nd img priority - Set to 0 - AF priority/Tracking Priority
3 - AI Servo Tracking Method - Set to 0 - Main Focus point priority
4 - Lens Drive when AF impossible - Set to 0
5 - AF Microadjustment - Set to 0
6 - AF area select mode - I have single point w/expansion selected and single point.
7 - AF Manual pt. selection pattern - Set to 1 (Continuous)
8 - VF display illumination - set to 1 (Enable)
9 - Display all AF points - Set to 0
10 - Focus Display in AI Servo/MF - Set to 0
11 - AF-assist beam firing - set to 2 (Enable to external flash only)
12 - Orientation linked AF point - Set to 0
13 - Mirror lockup - Set to 0 (Disable)

These are by no means definitive settings, still experimenting, but a whole lot better than
standard Tv. If anyone sees anything that can be tweaked, let me know.

#5 is fine in manual focus . If you use a zoom - 3 or less times - [ like the 70-200 is over 2 times , the 100-400 is 3 times ] check MA at wide and long .
My 28-135 needs + 2 at 28 and the 35-350 needs MA at both ends . The 135-400 and the 70-300 both need it on long ends .
Shots printed on 5 X 7 paper don't really show up - but start cropping and / or printing at 8 X 10 - you can see it .
I also use one spot focusing .

For sports such as basketball, wouldn't it be better to have C.Fn III (parameter 3) set to 1 (continuous AF track priority) if you have C.Fn III (Parameter 2) set to 0 (AF priority/Tracking priority)I

Good point, I'll give it a try. My son has another game this Thursday.

Custom functions are awesome. I use them constantly. My only complaint with them is that there should be 5 or 6 of them and you should be able to name them so you can remember the setups.

After playing with the Cfn settings and using the suggestions I got from everyone
here, my results were much better, but I noticed that they were soft, not
sharp at all, so I began to to play with the microadjust (#5) with my 70-200L 2.8 IS.
Still couldn't dial it in. Was going to send it to Canon, but wanted to see if there was a
better (i.e. less expensive) way. Did some research and found a lot of people using a
program called FoCal to help with focusing issues.
I went to their site (http://www.reikan.co.uk/focalweb/) and had a look. Very comprehensive.
Read some independent reviews and everyone loved it, so I bite the bullet
and bought the Pro version.

Setup and testing were very easy. The program suggested a MA of -9.
and asked me if it could automatically make the changes to -9, I agreed.
Took a few test shots with the 70-200IS and I was amazed, very
sharp. The true test will be on Tuesday when I shoot my son's soccer game.
But my initial impressions are nothing short of amazed, best $118 I've spent for
my cameras in a long time.
