Because the F3HP does not have the D4's sensor.....that's what is enticing to me

Not only this, but I think that film bodies and gear are depreciating pretty quick. It's becoming harder to find a place to develop film in a competent way. This, coupled with our instant gratification tendencies and the increasing quality of digital will likely relegate film to the dustbin. Granted, if you're looking at something like an F3 for a paperweight, I get that.

As someone who has been buying classic cameras for the past five years, I can tell you for sure that the better ones (F3HP, Leica, Nikon SP, Rolleiflex etc.) are NOT depreciating at this point. They seem to be increasing as more Chinese middle class are buying them. Film isn't going anywhere--Freestyle and Ilford report business is increasing. I have no trouble getting film processed even in the small city I live in. If I had to, I could process my own b&w. At the same time I bought the D7100 I also got a Leica IIIf. The D7100 has lost a third of it's value in about half a year. The IIIf is very slightly up in value from what I paid.

Downtown Camera in Toronto. Lovin the Df, now about 12 hours old in my posession. Just did some test images with my AI Nikkor 50mm f/1.4

Out of curiosity, I took a look at a website that does show the price history (historical chart) of a number of different cameras.

Here's the data on the Nikon FM2n:

Nikon SP:

Leica IIIc:

Rolleiflex K4:

Hasselblad 503CW:

This would probably make an interesting thread on its own, I suppose. But as everyone else is saying, don't buy anything digital with the idea of it holding value very long. Best bet is to wait about 6 months and then look for refurb or used.

I think those film companies reports increasing business because the bigger guys are quitting, they might just gained more market share but overall the film market is shrinking. It's like it's easier to catch fish when the pool is drying out... not that there are actually more fish.

Film is not practical for me... A big chain still do film processing but Pro labs are either closed or changed to digital printing. Developing film for on my own is next to impossible here since land price is crazy here and only billionaire could have a basement or garage (and they wouldn't convert those spaces into a darkroom). If I can find a good way to use film I'd go for medium format rather than 35mm film. (I still have some long expired 645 and 35mm slide films)

I haven't purchased a camera body just because it keeps its value.. If I do that it would probably be a Leica M film body. But I prefer something that I can use AND keep its value (like some manual focus lens).
