This must be the same panel that Dell said it would release at around the $1000 mark. 28". I think by the end of CES we will have a much better picture of where the 4K spectrum is heading. I'm holding off for now until things settle just a bit more before buying a 4K anything be it a monitor or new TV.

if it is that panel, then I'm not so sure about it, especially for serious photo people, i've heard strong rumors that the 28" sub $1000 Dell UHD monitor panel will be 6bit TN!!!!

But pretty interesting is that NEC is now said to release a PA242WUHD (guessing at the name) and a 27-30" UHD in May 2014.

A 72% color gamut isn't too inspiring, in my opinion.

Asus is also releasing this panel at 28" for $800. Seiki is releasing some smaller panels and given that their current 39" TV/monitor is under $500, we should have some real value propositions soon. However, if you want a proper gamut then it looks like the cheapest will be the 24" Dell that has 99% of Adobe RGB

yeah 72%, 6bit, TN, doesn't sound very good for photo-editing at all, the sub $1000 UHD 28" ones upcoming all seem more aimed at gamers/engineering/documents and that sort of stuff

Is it 72% NTSC or 72% of sRGB? (some cost cut displays these days are actually well under even sRGB)

Since 72% NTSC is about sRGB (assuming aligned the same way), I'm guessing it is probably sRGB and not sub-sRGB though. Probably a touch short 95-99% as almost all sRGB monitor are.

Assuming it is sRGB and not sub-sRGB, the TN panel and 6bit stuff might be the bigger issues for some. TN panels sometimes have some pretty savage vertical view angles and 6bits per channel isn't too much, especially since there is almost certainly no internal LUT, after calibration you are left with less than 6bits.

Actually some recent things hint that this 28" UHD from Dell might not be a crummy 6bit TN but might be 8bit VA or IPS so not that bad. It will be limited to max refresh rate of 30fps in UHD mode but apparently can be dropped back into HD mode at 60fps. I'm sure it won't have the 14 bit 3D LUT thing and it seems to be sRGB gamut and not wide.

And this one, the Lenovo may be a true 10bit panel.

I'd love to see a 28" like this only with the 14bit 3D LUT and wide gamut and a quick 1080p mode for games and stuff that is too hard to drive at UHD.
