In line with CaNikon's response to Sony/Sigma/Ricoh's large sensor challenge. Not much:

Looks like Nikon is sticking to its guns with that 16MP like it's the Holy Grail. 15 FPS or bust!

Maybe a retro 'F' body styling, silver ringed 58/1.4 and 'Nipon Kogaku' embossed leatherette case lined with mouse-fur, for $7k. And a new battery type just for the fun of it.

Sigh.

I was hoping for a D4x, but this sure looks like a very small incremental upgrade to the D4. Hopefully the rumors are wrong and we'll see something a bit more interesting.

Sigh indeed.

A D4x does seem like a logical next step. They'll probably put in the tweaked Dƒ sensor into this new body, broadcast-quality video and call it a day.

The Df's sensor was supposedly a bit better than the original D4's. I wonder if they threw that sensor into a D4 body and bumped up the FPS.

And a new incompatible card format, not much better than current high end CF cards.... (I am cynical)

Exactly: new battery and new card type and they'll have a winner!

I wonder how much they will improve low light performance with this new body. If it likes D3-D3s then I am excited but if D4-Df then no.

I imagine it will be called the D4.01 since, based on the rumoured specs, it looks like it could have been handled with a simple firmware upgrade instead of a whole new model...

Rumors of development are lame. Rumors of upcoming release is cool.

Updating the D4 at this point is less useful than the D600 to D610 update ... at least the D610 fixed something.

If they got rid of the XQD card, would that be considered a fix?

I will say the same sensor, the difference in measurements is more statistical errors due Marianne Oelund who has analyzed both cameras raw files

Drop in a game-changing, non-Bayer sensor into a D4 body and then there's a real point to the updated version.

Hell, if they'd have dropped in a monochrome sensor into the Dƒ, that'd be something to cheer about.

This could be good only if the price drops to $4,499.00. It's time to move past the 6K-8K bodies, unless it is a D4X 36mp,6-7fps with ISO = to the D800 or better. Dynamic Range would be the same at 100-6400. Nikon seems to be lost right now. I still think a tweaked and polished D800 would bring on many sales. But it may be to early economically for Nikon to make this move. I think Nikon is hurting financially. A world recession has made selling spendy camera bodies tough. Anyone know latest quarterly financials for Nikon. Just my 2 cents. I still shoot with a D7000, D800 and soon to be mint D700 and they all feel new and meet my needs.

On the mark.
Sony, Fujifilm, Sigma and Ricoh are rattling CaNikon's cage and they still churn out the usual incremental upgrades for top $¥£ (see: 5DIII) or unfocused pricey gimmicks (see: Dƒ). Just don't see the market for yet another $7k beast that isn't all that different from its predecessor.

Hell, look at what a Ricoh GR and an APS-C sensor can do; at 1/10th the cost of a Leica M9 or M240 and a 28 Elmarit ASPH, it is arguably their equal.

I don't think that many folks who are in the market for a D4 are also considering the Sony mirrorless options. The D4 is not designed to be a mass market camera.

True enough but the days when a pro DSLR was orders of magnitude above the next tier, are over.
