Playing around with my 100mm macro. I'm wide open for comments -- does it work? Fail miserably?

Thanks!

When I see an image with a large area out of focus and not immediately behind the subject, I usually find it unpleasant and almost dizzying. Certainly not your intent.
I think you could use the shallow dof and wish to isolate the nut effectively with a tighter crop. Looks like you have an almost 2:1 format going. What about a 4x5 or square format, keeping the nut a bit more off center and cropping (mostly) from the top?
Is this the Canon or the Nikon Macro?

Thank you Scott for the comments. I can certainly crop from the top. It's the Canon 100/2.8 non-L macro, hand-held in this case and using light from a window. I was trying to avoid having the unshelled nut dead center.

As an alternative, this other one has no out of focus elements. I like it better in some ways, not as well in others...

two variations
crop, rotate, slightly bump contrast, clarity, sharpness. Darkened upper right corner for depth
slight adjustment levels/curves.
I rotated the image to add a bit more dynamic positioning of the nut, place some darker area and depth in the upper right, and to use a bit of diagonals.
I probably should have used some noise reduction and/or masked the bit of sharpening.
Looking at the reposts, seems like it needs some color correction as well. The nut appears a bit too orange.
Anyhow, some directions to consider.
Scott

+1 @ Scott ... prefer the square.

Reminds me of a shot I did with Pistachios back in the 80's. I took a red magic marker and painted one of the shells. Yours has more "message" than mine did.

Keith,

What aperture were you shooting at?

With a nice static subject like that you might also want to look into focal stacking!

Thanks Jeff. I guess I was wrong to try for a selective focus and should have gone more the other way. Stacking would have worked well in that case.
