Ok, so I will have a 14-24mm and most likely a D600.

So what other lens would be good? I was super happy with the kit lens (24-85), but am looking at the 24-120mm as well.. To be honest, I don't think I would use the longer FL as much - as I haven't seen a need for them to this point. I did well with just a 14mm all of last year.

I am open to suggestions as well. There is quite a price difference between the 24-85 and 24-120. I will be tripod mounted most of the time, as I will be there in October (fingers crossed!) ..

Thanks for any suggestions

My FX light travel kit usually consists of the 14-24, the 28-300VR (nothing beats the range and the versatility, something important when I travel), even if IQ will be slightly (but just slightly) lower than with top lenses. I also often add a prime like the 50 1.8 AFS or a manual focus lens (Voigtlander 40mm, Zeiss 50 1.4, Samyang 35 1.4 for instance) for low light shooting.
But I could probably live with the new 24-120VR you're mentioning.

I'm planning on taking my 16-35mm and 80-400mm - it's my travel combo now unless city stuff then the 24-120 works really well. The 80-400 for some rare landscape shots but mostly the horses and puffins. And people shots too at the 80mm end

thanks for the suggestions. The 80-400 is too much $$$ - but 24-120 looks to be stellar from the results I have found

I have Canon and only used the 24-105.Was more than enough....I also used 70-200 for horses....landscape only 24-105. If Canon had 14-24 of Nikon, I would also take it. I have to say that Nikon users almost always used 24-70...and wished they had 24-105 that I had with me.

Most important thing to bring is a polarizer.

What are your plans? Is it a photography trip or a family trip with some photography.
I'm going to Iceland the last week of June for a photography workshop.
It will be mainly landscape photography and one day birding.
My kit will be:
D800E, 16-35/4.0G, 24/1.4G, 35/1.4G, 50,/1.8G, 85/1.4G, 80-400G and of course polariser, (G)ND filters, tripod
I'll probably take my V2, 10-100 and FT-1 with me as well.

If it was a family trip I would take a 16-35/4.0G, 28-300G and probably a SB700 with me.

Dustin,
Shooting landscapes exclusively, along with my D800E, the 14-24 and 24-120 has been used for 100% of the shots I've taken in the past year.

After shooting with the Samyang 14mm, 17-40L, 24-105L and 70-200L, it's been so nice to shoot with just two lenses that cover all my focal needs, which is what the 14-24 and 24-120 really allow you to do if you shoot landscapes (IMO).

I was on the fence between getting the 24-85 or 24-120 as well but decided to go with the 24-120 for the extra reach. If you pixel peep, I don't think the differences are great enough between the two. Ultimately, it became a focal length decision for me. I don't shoot past 85mm a lot, but I have enough times that makes me thankful for that slight bit of reach without switching lenses.

My plan is pretty sweet, at least I tell myself this. First thing I do when land in Reykjavik is get my rental vehicle and LEAVE Reykjavik . I am planning on being there for 13 days, but hopefully I can add 2 days to this if I can save up enough vacation time between now and October.

I will sleep in the car the whole time - but will bring a tent with me, just in case. Then I will just drive and shoot the locations that look good, depending on light

Wow, that's even better than my schedule.
So not much lugging around, only airline restrictions when bringing your gear.

If you've got time on your hands (and it seems you do as your trip isn't until October) I'd wait it out and see what the Sigma 24-105 f/4 brings to the party in Nikon mount. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the Nikon mount and impressions of it before deciding whether to get one. 24-105 is a great range for studio portraiture and a good walk around range, but the Nikon 24-120 is less than stellar in my opinion for its price.
