p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hi : ) !!! - 24-70 mm. f/4 L - A quick question !!!

Hi,

Is that right, that the only differences between the f/4 lens and the f/2.8 lens are:

1. The faster stop, one is f/4, the other is f/2.8
2. The .7x macro capability of the lens with f/4,
the f/2.8 doesn't have this macro capability.
3. The f/4 lens has IS, the f/2.8 does not.

Thank you in advance, kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

Those are the main functional differences. I wouldn't exactly say that "those are the only differences," as that implies that they are the same lenses apart from those functional differences. They are actually two completely different lens models.

Hi Dan,

lenses?

Kind regards,

I have not used the f/4 lens, so I only know first hand the performance of the f/2.8 lens. There are a number of reviews of both lenses online if you want details. I will say that both are excellent lenses.

24-70 II 2.8 is generally a bit better at any aperture, especially f/4-f/5.6 and, in general, near 50mm. At 70mm I think the edges on FF are actually better from the f/4 IS though. The 2.8 II fights off longitudinal CA (purple fringing) better (although the f/4 IS does pretty well in this regard, better than the 24-105L for sure and the 2.8 II does exceedingly well in that regard). The 24-70 f/4 IS actually has less distortion at 24mm, in fact, the least of any of the standard FF zooms be they from Sigma, Canon, Tamron or Nikon.

I have both but the f4 was purchased very recently. Haven't used it much yet. From the limited number of picture I took with the f4, to my eyes, the f2.8 is sharper and more contrasty. But it's really not a head to head direct comparison. Haven't had time to do that.

For my usage, the IS is more valuable than the one extra stop of light.

If you photograph static subjects, that IS is very handy. For subject motion not so much.

Good point. And a reminder that the OP is still asking a question without context. Any of the three 24-Xmm zooms can be excellent choices, but which one is "best" depends completely on the specific needs of the photographer - which we don't know at all in this case.

(I wrote something about this at my blog that might be interesting to some.)

Hi,

Thank you for your messages : ) !!!

I am just looking for a good zoom in that range.
The most important think for me is the glass!
It is ok if it doesn't go down f/2.8 With the
current ISOs, I can more or less manage with
f/4 + IS

Kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

The f/4 IS seems to be a bit weaker right at 50mm in most copies. Many people shoot zooms at the extremes, mostly, so this isn't necessarily a big deal. The f/2.8 II has better resolution in lab tests. Whether that translates to better images is less certain. Both are excellent lenses.

No one mentioned size so far, which is in my eyes the best virtue of the f4.0. For everything else I find alternatives more attractive, especially given the price of the f4.0

If I needed 2.8, needless to say I would get the 2.8, If I wanted to spend less money and get more range I would get the 24-105/L IS. Some third party glass from Tamron and Sigma is also attractive, you might want to have a look at the new Sigma 24-105 or the Tamron 24-70.

Really the Canon EF 24-70/4.0L IS lacks L quality in the mid range, the macro is hindered by the very close working distance and the price tag is high. It's for a good reason that the alternatives I mentioned are much more popular.

Anyway: have EOSfun
