The 600mm is expected to be my main use for the lens, but if quality is acceptable, I could see stretching to 840mm with a 1.4X TC on occasion, such as for nesting birds or other more static scenes. Didn't I read that this lens would report as f5.6 to autofocus at f6.3 on cameras designed to AF at f5.6? So I would assume it would also AF at f8.8 for cameras, such as the 5DIII, designed for AF at f8.

Thanks
Steve

That's basically what I was thinking Steve. Still waiting for that rumored firmware update that enables center-point F/8 focusing on the 6D, though- and it'd be really nice if they put it on the 70D too .

There are always the eternal optimists that will slap a TC on any lens and expect stellar results.

They don't seem to comprehend the image degradation, slower AF, and loss of light.

Considering how easily my 6D autofocuses with my 400 DO with stacked 1.4TC's, I have no idea why there hasn't been a firmware update for the 6D. I mean, it's all 11 focus points in spot or AI Servo, and it's accurate.

I pre-ordered the 150-600 to compare to my 400 DO, I'll be sure to report back the effects of putting a Kenko 1.4TC with taped pins on the Tamron, as well as how it compares to the 400 DO at 560mm.

Certainly, but there is a reason why Canon disables the ability of certain cameras to AF at f8. It is because the degradation in IQ and AF is so bad that customers would be complaining about the poor performance.

Product differentiation? As a Canon user who doesn't use their top end stuff their attitude towards their customers is frustrating.

I guess I read at least one post too many on this and the other thread on this lens. Just placed my pre-order with Adorama. If it proves to be a good one, it will probably displace my EF-400 5.6. We will keep our hopes up for this lens providing that extra reach at a moderate cost.

Will probably keep the 100-400 for kayaking and as a lighter option.

Any speculation on the quality to expect with a 1.4X III on a 5DIII for 840mm?

Steve

IQ may hold up okay.....AF will likely be the problem....even my 600II at 1200mm at f/8 isn't the best at AF for anything that moves. The 100-400 with 1.4 is fairly sad at moving subject AF also. I would be assuming that this Tamron will be even worse.

I believe this lens will be fine for a lot of BIF natively, but I think that anyone trying to effectively shoot BIF with a telextender attached to this lens may be asking way too much.

For more static subjects, the lens and an appropriate telextender may provide acceptable results. Can't wait to see some field reviews done in the States.

And I hope mine arrives in about 10 days!

I wouldn't expect BIF AF with a 1.4X TC, but would be happy if the quality is acceptable for static subjects, even if focus has to be with Live-view.

Most important will be the AF and quality at 600mm though.

Agreed, although good performance throughout the entire focal range will create a lot of 100-400mm used sales.

Not really sure how much PP it would take for a 400 mm shot cropped to 600 mm to equal a 600 mm one . Being that I use a 7 D that 200 mm turns into 320 mm - which means shots I could not hope to get before .
Yes , I tried mirror lenses and either I suck and / or the lens .
600 mm opens a new world to a hobbyist like me I hope .
People start comparing it to lenses I would never own / afford don't realize 600 dollars is a lot for a printer for most of us and saying a 1000 dollar lens won't compare to their 8000 one - well , you decide .

Not only is the cost a determining factor, but for me the weight is as well. This lens comes in at 1 pound lighter than my 300 2.8 with a 2X teleconverter which is the absolute limit for what I can handle handheld, due to age, gender and size. Even if the cost was reasonable for my budget for a 600mm lens from Canon I couldn't use it without a tripod anyway because of the weight. Alot of the wildlife shooting I enjoy would be limited by having to also pack around and set up a tripod.

I've ordered this lens and am really anxious to give it a try. I've used Tamrons newest VC before and I'm hoping it's capaabilities don't disappoint on this lens.

But it'll have to be good. A 100-400L can be used wide open, even with a TC and you can get very good IQ. I only stop down for DoF. If the Tamron is on par with the 100-400L wide open all through the FL range, then certainly I'd have no hesitation swapping the two.

To me, the Tamron doesn't need to be as good as the 100-400L wide open, but if it can keep up with it at f/8, but give the user an extra 200mm to play with (over the 100-400L), it's a success in my book. If in good light I'll use my 7D, if in bad light I'll use my 6D and crank up the ISO, either way I hope the Tamron fills my needs due to it's incredible zoom range. If not, I'll return it or sell it on here.

Well I'd rather not have to only use my 600mm in very good light if it's essentially a 600 f/9 or f/10. It'd be nice to have at least the 2/3 stop advantage over using the 100-400 + 1.4.

And once again, it cost less than the 100-400, plus there is not the inconvenience of putting on and taking off a TC.

4 DAYS TO GO....

Yes I'm shouting and I'm not even ordering this lens. I'm just really intrigued by what the final verdict will be when it gets into the hands of trusted FM members. Then I may order it if it can fill a need for me.

Who on here is getting this from day one? I know Karl is and Kathy.

Can't wait to see if this thing is the real deal.....

Another thing that I didn't see in this thread, a byproduct If you will, is we won't have to be quite as close to our subjects. This especially applies to some people who might not be as aware of how disturbing it can sometimes be to get too close. I also realize for some it won't really make a difference anyways, because they always have to get close, and they don't really care anyways.

I'd guess I'm close to head of preorder line at B&H.

I ordered the pair within minutes of preorder link going live which was 5:19AM Colorado Time on Christmas Eve & I paid for 2 day delivery.

Not sure if Canon & Nikon mounts will ship together or if Canon will arrive 1st.

I am really excited, a decent image stabilized lens w/decent af at 400-600mm is just what I need.

I've had good luck w/ buying used Tamron lenses.

This is 1st time I've preordered any imaging gear.

Tamron's Dec 13th 2013 150-600mm announcement made me close my wallet to Canon & Nikon Holiday specials. Well that & I refuse to participate in mail away & pray rebate schemes or having to buy a camera I don't need to then get a deal on a lens:

I guess that is because everyone knows that.
